Well if they are going to be as quick with the other intersections as it seems they are being with this one it should go ok. One more year and a ton of construction sites will disappear which will improve the feel of downtown.
LRT is our future, time to push forward.

^ Except, that's when they'll start tearing up 102 west to 107 street.

At least the westbound leg will only have one busy intersection at 102 Avenue/105 Street.

I wonder if 102 Avenue (between 100 and 101 Street) will be done by fall.

Interesting view of the 3 buildings, which I assume will never be seen again once something replaces the old BoM building. Until that's replaced.

102 avenue has been closed for a year or longer and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

Walked by the 101 and 102 site today. There is a good chance the road will be paved this week. (I did see paving stone though) Final concrete forms are going in tonight.

Nice pics. What a difference in a couple of months once they have the tracks in and rebuild the road. So much dust right now.

Updates to the Cloverdale/Muttart segment. Many apologies if I've broken any width violations.

That intersection was definitely done quite fast. I wonder if they will be pouring any of the track bed heading towards churchill sometime soon ir will they be focusing on the downtown intersections first?

I am hopeful about the amount of soft scaping that shows up in the drawings. Travelling around lately, it's something Edmonton really seems to struggle with. I get it, the climate is not the most conducive, but a little green goes a long way.

June 10 is supposed to be the closure of 100 St/102 Ave intersection for 6 weeks, so they damn well better finish up soon.

At least 101 Street/102 Avenue is on schedule. It might be a tall order, but I hope the city can finish up 100 Street in time for K-Days.

^^ K-Days? Parade maybe? Not sure what 100 St. has to do with K-Daze.

Back on topic - hoping to see more progress on the NSR bridge - haven't really seen much progress.

Unfortunately I feel they are still continuing their practice of deploying and working on part of the project and then when partially done they move on to another section without actually completing the site they were initially working on. I think they are rushing to get things done but losing more time in how they are rushing.

It would be nice if the city could put up signs around Kingsway, Connors Road and other locations to detour away from 101 Street. It’s a zoo at 5:00 pm

Why have they left this sign up? It has to be nearing 15 years old now. Per Google, it's been there since before early 2007.

Thank Stephen Harper for forcing a P3 on the city.

The decision to apply for funding through PPP Canada was not an easy one, but Council did not have much of a choice. The City simply cannot afford to build the LRT on its own – the provincial and federal governments must come to the table. Though it hasn’t been explicitly stated as such by those involved, it seems the only way the Government of Canada would provide funding was through the P3 Canada fund. Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi has been vocal about his concern around being cornered into a P3, saying “the real problem is that the only dedicated federal funding at this moment is through P3 Canada.”

Edmonton hosts transit oriented development symposium
    June 20, 2019

More than 100 development, planning and transit experts will come together Thursday, June 20 for the City of Edmonton’s Transit Oriented Development symposium.

The day-long event at MacEwan University features experts from the development, academic and urban planning fields to discuss the future of transit oriented development as Edmonton builds a new City Plan in 2020 that envisions a population of two million. The discussions from the event will help inform Edmonton’s transit oriented development policies and guidelines, alongside the ongoing public engagement efforts the City is undertaking as part of its work to create a new City Plan.

“This is an exciting moment in Edmonton. Through LRT expansion and other transit infrastructure investments, we are supporting a sustainable city and building for our future,” said Adam Laughlin, Deputy City Manager of Integrated Infrastructure Services. “This symposium is an important opportunity for the City to help facilitate discussion about increased development around transit as we work toward creating more appealing, walkable and vibrant communities.”

Edmonton is undertaking an expansion of its LRT network that provides opportunities for transit oriented development, including the city’s biggest infrastructure project to date, the 27-kilometre Valley Line. The southeast portion of that line, from Mill Woods to Downtown, is currently under construction. The west leg of the Valley Line, connecting Downtown to Lewis Farms, and the extension of the Metro Line into Blatchford, are both expected to begin construction next year.

Best to wait until the project finished before judging. I’m still waiting on the metro line to NAIT.

It is furthest behind due to that mystery underwater concrete slab.

    Who knows!?

It was supposed to be up & open last month but given the issues at the site with undiscovered stuff in the way & the year they're behind schedule across the whole project it's anyone's guess when the new one'll be done.

Given that the bridge was supposed to be open last month (based on initial timelines), there's no way the mystery is entirely responsible for the delays. It's just a convenient scapegoat.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Amazing that the project would be delayed by a concrete slab the size of a car.

I wonder what they would do if they had to deal with blasting a 70 meter deep hole through solid granite like the station shaft for the REM LRT line in Montreal?

This hole is only 36 meters deep so far, 34 meters to go. BTW, it is ahead of schedule

I'm assuming it's a part of the delay, but certainly not all of it.

You realize that solid rock is easier & simpler to deal with than the far more complicated conditions in the river valley, right?

Really, a car sized piece of concrete stymied a whole project? "Due to its size, it cannot be moved, so construction crews are forced to work around the obstruction and redesign the construction area."

Could they not cut through the concrete? Concrete has only 1/3rd the compressive strength of granite

Maybe they need a hard rock miner to show them how.

Apparently it was where a footing was to go and so there was a re-design required...

The concrete in the river is, get this, underwater. They'd likely have to build a cofferdam or similar to address it, and that might well have been a non-starter due to timelines, environmental approvals, navigable waterways act etc. Believe it or not, not everything is as simple as you seem to think.

Did they not do test corings to determine the conditions BEFORE construction?

    What is that number again?

People also keep forgetting that the river is a Federal waterway (which is why the River Queen needs a proper Captain), so there's that whole layer of consideration.

People also keep forgetting that there were people actively involved in solving the problem one way or other, each with with its own Cost/Benefit calculation, so it's not like they're missing something that seems "obvious" to an armchair commenter.

    ^ tongue in cheek...

I understand that the slab or old footings or an old pier was an unexpected issue.

I have talked with the crews that are doing the test coring of the pylon locations for the elevate REM line. They have to drill a grid of 5 holes, 150% of the depth of each footing.

They drilled a huge number of holes

The single issue does not explain why the project is falling behind.

Just because granite is physically harder than the conditions in Edmonton does not, once again, indicate that the actual job is harder.

I haven't seen what they're doing but if they're around 8 feet deep they might be doing upgrades to the storm/sanitation and water mains.
