Actually folks, the only reason CTV has a need to fill the 5-6pm slot is because Oprah got cancelled.

To suggest that they are better serving the public by having three competing newscasts on at the exact same time covering the exact same issues is ludicrous.

Besides Judge Judy is on the other station at the same time. It's on at that time to maximize revenue by simulcasting the program against the US signal. I believe that other station made a commitment to providing coverage of local issues as well. So why aren't they?

I wonder if the Toronto bean counters realize that "New West" is a suburb of Vancouver?

I will estimate that "Coronation Street" at 6:30 gets higher ratings than the previous 3 half hour segments of CBC Edmonton news, and probably gets more viewers than each of CTV and Global in the 6:30-7:00 time slot.

According to some tweets, the new Global 6 pm anchor will be one of the best around and absolutely gorgeous, expect Carole Anne Guay to soon be joining Gord Steinke.

Are you telling us that the only reason you tune into Global is to drool over the (female) anchors? C'mon. I mean, really.

What, you don't drool over Steinke's square-jawed manliness?

Good for Guay though. She's come a long way in a short time from being a CBC beat reporter.

Who's the new weather guy and where did he come from?

Seems like he's got a stick up his arse and is pretty wooden. Show a little life!

Who? If you're referring to Richard Ozero, he was on CTV Edmonton for about 15 years.

^ Even though your link still works, he's not listed any more.
Global does not have Ozero's bio up yet, nor of Ross Neitz (sp). No surprise.

I'd say both CTV and Global suck at updating local bios.

Why two separate stories by two separate reporters (Kendra and Laurel) on the retirement of Edmonton's last milkman?

Some kind soul some months ago upped Bill Matheson's last show from Dec. 1999 onto youtube.

I watched Part 1 and going to watch the other parts later. I can't believe it's been 13 years.

Yeah, that's him. I know he's new at Global and all that but I'm hoping in time he takes that wooden stick out of his ***. I've never seen a more boring weatherperson in my entire life.

If you folks thought Christina Salvo was bad, I personally think Nancy Carlson makes the late news even more painful to watch: constantly tripping over her tongue, bad pronunciations, flailing her hands around and clapping them together and the phony grins and expressions. guh

    ^^ & ^ So true.

I watch Global News Final only because of CBC's insistence that "your local news" on weekdays consists of stories from north of High Level. There must be all of fifty viewers watching that.

Global's Carlson has to be the most irritating presenter there is.

Global has a new reporter, Jenna Bridges. She used to be on Breakfast TV in Calgary. Not bad!

    Here's the best advice:

Use your PVR to watch programs that actually interest you, when you want to see them - you can forward through the commercials. Use the Internet to inform yourself.

Since I got my PVR I hardly watch the "news" and I find that I haven't missed a thing.

They could present a 24 hour newscast for all I care; it will still be the same 10 minutes of actual news repeated over and over in between car advertisements and health "news".

    What a waste.

Agreed and it usually includes the 10 minute "feel good story".

Shaye at least gives some thought to all that news he reads everyday off the teleprompter. Wow, a news anchor who can actually think for himself, refreshing.

More suckitude from Global. While most local media mentioned Edmonton's job rate increase while the rest of the province decreased, this is Global Edmonton's pathetic story focusing entirely on Calgary:

Global Morning News this morning: When showing Black Friday destruction pics before a commercial break, they played a snippet of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here". Gawd, what utter fools LOL!

Anyone catch the 6:00 Global news tonight? The top story was a woman recieving an ambulance bill 3 times that was rectified with Capitol Health admitting the mistake.

    Seriously, top story?

It's the spelling mistakes that get me. A few days they did a story about The Super Bowl and they had a picture and titled it "Bourban Street. Someone is too lazy to use spell check.

Ha Ha! Boob of the week on Global Late Night tonight.

An accompanying map to the story on the earthquake in the Solomon Islands off Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific Ocean showed the location as being in the Caribbean. How 'off' can you get?

I've found that the quality of Global's newscasts circulating around the toilet bowl again. The worst are the weekends with their 5 minutes of local news and 20 minutes of canned stories.

Default Global Edmonton News suffers Dyslexia!

Quote Originally Posted by Barry N View Post

Ridiculous that a news outlet would have to employ - accommodate dyslexic people!
Edmonton Global News Morning/Noon/Evening is a complete embarrassment to Canadians.

This news station does not spell check nor do they have an editor that double checks the content of the message that goes on air.

It is about time that the Canadian Regulatory Board intercede with this station: they need to clean up with their ridiculous 'entertainment tonight' content and make it news and get people who know a little something about English Literature.

As well, Edmonton Global news continually shows the wrong temperature on the screen! I don't know how many times in the morning that I have seen it read minus two Celsius when it is actually minus twenty outside! This is really a problem when people are tuning in to get a quick look to see the temperature and then 'run' out of the door to find out that it is 'bloody' damn cold out and not the balmy temperature that global Edmonton has left on the tube from the evening aft.

Global, you have no obligation in law to keep dyslexic people employed ( I think this would be considered undue hardship!), perhaps you can shift these people to other duties ( boot Jennifer Crosby from the desk since she is the know-it-all, let her have the editing job... and place the lively Nicole beside Shaye!).

And the death spiral continue's. The morning news on Global has become a production joke - it seems in the last few months or so it's getting worse and worse. The little errors every 10 or 15 minutes are rampant.

Global theme music at the wrong time.

Microphones not turned on when needed, even within the studio, leading to dead air and a "technical" apology. This happens almost every hour.

The wrong name of the partial song you hear and band displayed on the TV. (how do you confuse The Cars with Lady Gaga?)

Camera's unexpectedly turning on when a prerecorded story is playing catching Shaye & Jen by complete surprise. (was funny as hell though, Shaye's reaction cracked me up). I've seen this 3 times in the last week or so.

I don't mind the odd flaw, I mean we're all human after all. But this has been getting silly. It's almost like they got rid of the experienced staff that worked behind the scenes and hired a bunch of n00b kids to run the show. The good news is that the evening news isn't plagued by these problems (from what I've noticed) like the morning show is, but I really hope they start getting things together.

Someone might want to tell them that modern technology actually has remote cameras that broadcast 30 frames per second and not stop motion. Their newest camera @ Shaw School of Business drives me crazy with the jerky video of cars moving and then stopping and then moving again. Maybe Shaw can put a crowbar in their wallet and spring for proper cameras.

lol and the 1980's grain that go's with it. I'm especially fond of the camera overlooking Churchill Square, I think it's about 1 frame per second.

Yes I have noticed that as well. Other stations can have cameras that actually have perfect pictures at 30 fps. What is wrong that we can't ? And don't get me started with the quality of the traffic cams ?

CTV has its faults - I've turned them off before when their focus became too rural, or when they had pro-NIMBY slants to their stories, or when they spend too much time in their own hockey rink. But I'm finding that they've been producing a better newscast overall as of late - more local news and less canned stories, plus a more polished, more professional feel. Plus they have no Layton, no Bryan Hall, and no weather lady who is slowly becoming more mental.

I dont find anything wrong with hall, but the biggest **** off is when the weather people just go on and on about non weather crap. I just wanna hear the weather and nothing else, case in point sobel always has to have a dog with him, and the way he treats them with the leash makes me wanna punch him in the face.

I wish Global's weather forecasters would get out of the camera when they are showing the long term forecast. How do these idiots expect to read through them?

And what I see is a massive reduction in local content. Most of the stories are from Toronto and Calgary. BIG HONKIN' EPIC FAIL.

^ I was referring to the Edmonton page:
    http://globalnews.ca/edmonton/

Of the 3 main networks, CBC has the best news pages if you ask me. CTV Edmonton is OK but kinda disorganized.

Even the evening news has had some poor production quality in the last little bit. Same issues that Kitlope mentioned. I understand that sometimes mistakes happen, but there are a lot of them happening.

Caught a glimpse of the morning broadcast yesterday for the first time in months. They still don't seem like they want to be sitting beside each other, it's odd.

You sure we're both looking at the same website? Seems to be only 4 or 5 Edmonton articles. Then again I don't know how often they're updating it. Hopefully they won't be just copying and pasting Journal articles anymore.

LIkewise I flipped over Global Morning News for a 7 AM start earlier this week. After just 5 minutes of news, seeing Ganam's dour face, a couple of on-location spots with an unenthusiastic Lorraine Manbridge (she should just retire already), then a series of miscues and gaffes following the commercial break - nobody knew what segment was next - I flipped back to CTVML.

Well if there monitoring this all i gotta say is, please fire the morons who are running the control room as they don't know how to switch to the news story or cue the audio at all. The past few weeks have been one mistake after another, in all the years i have watched Global, itv before that this has been the worst.

I wish Global would post their own stories on their website. They've got at least 3 so-called "web producers", they shouldn't have to keep reposting Edmonton Journal's online articles.

^ Not anymore...they have been in separate companies for 2 - 3 years now - Global is owned by Shaw and the Journal is owned by Postmedia. I remember that laughable time about 10 or 15 years ago when Global News broadcasts were turned into hour-long ads for the Journal.

Has anyone else noticed how aften an anchor person gets cut off (goes to the prerecorded story) in mid sentence lately ? I have never in my life seen the station run like it's amatuers as I have recentley. I think I recall Global saying thanks in the fall (before all these little guffaws) to some vets retiring that worked behind the scenes...

It's been painful now for some months

^ Yep. In the last little bit, there has been many many examples of just poor production quality. Time to bring the vets out of retirement, and whip the rookies into shape.

I've quit watching Global altogether. I always watched the weekend morning shows until a couple of weeks ago, but the Mickey Mouse production was getting on my nerves, as well as the constant smug tittering between Shane and Kevin. Another thing that ticked me off was when our local news was scrubbed for a simulcast from Global Calgary during the flood.

No argument from me. Pet peeve? Nancy Carlson. Peculiar inflections, verbal stumbles, and what's with all the hand flailing? Does she ever review beforehand which names, etc., might be difficult to pronounce, and rehearse them a little? I can't figure out why too many local newsreaders fluff their lines. The national stations of all the majors don't seem to have this problem. I take it they all use the same devices to read from?

Good point - Global is horrendous. But watching CBC national news last week when the weather girl said that "all of Alberta's golf courses all flooded." Or when the anchor thought that "all of us Albertans could use some good news - the Jays won another game!" Are you kidding me?
