Default ESL at the Elementry level...

I am a Canadian and I will be migrating to Edmonton in the spring of 2010.
My children, althought only speak Japanese, recognise and understand English. I'm trying to no avail, find elementry schools in Edmonton with ESL. I've asked the school board, but they suggested that I contact schools directly...meh.

    Please advise...

EPSB offers schooling in a variety of languages, including Japanese.

^only as a second language. The Japanese community in Edmonton runs a Japanese school on Friday evenings, it is intended for children who are already fluent in Japanese to keep up with the Japanese curriculum:

Will need to go to a Canadian school during the day though, perhaps the program Etown refers to.

As I understand it, the problem is finding an English as a Second Language program at the elementary level not finding a Japanese language program.

I believe children of that age do not have/ do not require an ESL program as they tend to learn the language quite quickly when very young. I would not worry about finding an ESL program (if one exists). I would worry about finding a good school with a good and patient teacher who will provide your children with a little bit of extra support when needed.

I hope this can help, looks like EPSB has a well developed program to evaluate ESL kids: http://consultingservices.epsb.net/elssc/index.cfm
Welcome to Edmonton and best of luck !
