Indeed. Great to see. Let's hope it moves forward as fast as we have been told.

Incorrect. Conditions were not removed until they had an approved Development Permit which required them to get through their appeal period (not go to SDAB). This just occurred around a week or so ago.

That's what I thought I read or heard somewhere as well.

I would hope they'd want to get in there before all the LRT construction really kicks up in that area so to avoid any issues, in case any do arise.

Lrt construction shouldn't affect this project at all, whatever Cidex decides to build there.

Any update on this one? They seemed to have a pretty aggressive timeline so I wasn't holding my breath when I heard December for this one.

Cidex is going to mobilize to site very quickly, apparently. They have been tendering the major sub-trades.

    What?

Marcel says they've been tendering to major sub-trades. They have a development permit. It has been designed.

Yeah, I contacted Cidex when I saw the CBC article a few weeks ago, and five minutes later had completed tender drawings. The building is fully designed. I was kind of surprised, I figured that it would be months before they were ready to tender and mobilize to site, and just figured they'd need a budget for the time being. But they are apparently not screwing around.

This is good news Marcel. That'd be great to see a crane in the hole there around Easter or even earlier.

I'll admit it looks promising, I wont hold my breath just yet but if they can start as they say they are going to do, I think we can see potentially more positive movement in the area as well.

Wow...that's good news. Now to get some updated renders.

Honestly, at this point, I wouldn't even mind if the tower looked like the Fox Towers. That hole was just so laughable...option B could have been to turn it into a storm water retention tank for the Quarters

While I freely admit to having a very poor eye for this kind of thing, in my opinion both the podium and tower on this are a good step or two up from the Foxes design wise.

Edmontonium on SSP said there is work being done on the site (mobile crane, backhoe and workers in the pit).

Black Star stated that there was soil sampling done on the north side across the street.

That's really disappointing. What better way to pay homage to our Albertan heritage than having a giant dugout beside our downtown?

So what was the problem exactly?

The new owner group dug two feet deeper and continued the project like any old regular tower construction. Was the geotechnical concerns legit or just an excuse?

BCM is a notorious developer for not being able to effectively manage their projects then leaving them abandoned. Letís be glad this is in competent hands now and weíre not left with a condo where unit owners are stuck retrofitting the place because of questionable engineering practices or fixing things because of incompetent sub trades.

Not that Iíve experienced this first hand or anything.

assuming there was a missing sarcasm emoji there, a better way might have been to gravel the bottom of the dugout and let people park there [insert sarcasm emoji here ]

the crane itself seems to be fully erected (at least until its first climb) as of my drive home a short time ago. didnít have a chance to take a quick photo so youíll have to take my word for it but it looks good there... it also emphasizes how tight that site really is.

This development will be great for that corner and neighbourhood, and hopefully this will kickstart more redevelopment in the area. I would love to see the Chinatown Mall across the street torn down and redeveloped. Does anyone know what the deal is with that place?

I heard a similar story from a few people within the Chinese community that the owner is in HK, and allegedly he wanted to develop a tower quite a while ago, but combination of the airport and Boyle Street NIMBY groups worried about tower shadows left the owner to just leave it as is.

I'm wondering how they got that backhoe in there without a ramp egress like tower B had. That crane doesn't appear to strong too support lifting a backhoe in there unless it was done piece by piece and assembled. That's my guess.

Not a backhoe, it's a track hoe or excavator. A backhoe looks like a regular farm tractor with a cab with the bucket digger on the back. Therefore BACKhoe. lol

Its on a track, that much I know. I imagine it got deposited there in sections and reassembled. Regardless of the exact name of the piece of equipment I was just wondering how it got inside the pit without a ramp. It says Cat if you want to "get technical."

Caterpillar is the brand name of the manufacturer. They make many types of equipment

The impact would be more than that. It signals to any developer that the time has come to truly be confident this area is now riped for change. Aldritt will only put this into overdrive or turbo boost.

Was the Hyatt not enough of a signal? I'm still skeptical that this will create redevelopment in the area.

Scroll up, I asked about this already. Owner lives in Hong Kong and thus unlikely it will be redeveloped anytime soon

With people moving into the area I can't see why it couldn't be a go to place with fairly good food, a convenience store and other services. A bit of fixing and cleaning and it could be ok.

So happy to see this moving along. I'm actually quite excited about this tower for some reason.

It was part of that signal, as was Alldritt, as was The Nook, as was The Moth, as will be The Brighton Block...

wish our asian malls were successful. While Calgary is building a new giant one across from Cross Iron, our stock of asian malls have died a slow death: Pacific Rim mall, Mirama building...

^ I just noticed that according to Google street views last update the strip mall across the street from Corners 1 looks all boarded up. I haven't been in the area lately. Just wondering if anyone knows what's going on with that strip mall.

Followers tend to wait for a few other leaders to step up before they partake. The Hotel just perked everyone"s ears. This project opened their eyes. Aldritt will push them to the door of the party. Add n supporting cast such as Mr
Canter's project, something is about yo jappen in a good way.

The only risk is that the following players aim for the same scale as Aldritt, imagining that 80 stories there sets the bar for what their land should be worth, and their developments can achieve.

And then do little or nothing for a long time.
    There can only be one.

Hence why i suggested on another thread that, after Aldritt and BMO, super tall should be halted unti empty lots are filled. They should be given some heights for maxing profits however.

Population density can hit a critical mass where suddenly a community can sprout smaller developments and attract retail, restaurants, and small to medium sized businesses. Iím all for building whatever size developers want so long as the towers are tasteful and interact with the community.

The quarters needs any and all help it can get.
