Plan (as in, gee we sure hope) is for mid-rises 6-15 stories.

Looks like La Prep is closed in Bell tower. Not sure if permanent or what. Will have to swing by for a closer look later.

^Finally . Nice to see something in that corner after all these years.

Does anyone have any idea as to when Gyu-Kaku will be opening? Or was that hearsay? Are there any other rumored deals in the works for this corner?

Lease agreement was signed in August for Gyu-Kaku. Spoke to the owner of the one in Calgary as he is the one opening the Edmonton one.

Lots of vacancies along 104 Street these days for some nice shops:

    Icon I and II
    http://cwedm.com/properties/details/...tower+i+%26+ii

    Fox I and II
    http://cwedm.com/properties/details/...towers+1+%26+2

    The Century:

What do you think? Are these prices right or a little too high and scaring off life on the street?

Hard to say given that the Fox and Icon spaces don't have a rate listed. The Century space at $27 or so doesn't seem outlandish, but it's not a great space as currently laid out either.

Not a fan, but that really does make sense for that corner.

already have the Tims on 107th and 102nd already. A McCafe woulda been nice. As much as I love Credo, sometimes I just want a massive americano on the run.

Given they already have one on 102 and 107 Streets, it seems a bit much. I wonder if this means the demise of the 102 Street location, which I think in some ways is better located (near the bus stop and in the office tower/complex building), as is the 107 Street one. Although, perhaps they can have a bigger location in the old Sobey's space than the 102 Street one.

From what I heard a while back, Tim Horton's wanted 3 more locations Downtown. They obviously think the area can handle it.

I do worry about what this means for someone like Credo. I know it's not the same, but it could mean the difference between profitability and not.

I dunno, Tim's has two locations within City Centre Mall itself, and they're both busy... so maybe they can sustain one more here.

I think Credo serves a different market of coffee drinker -- I'll walk blocks for a cuppa joe from them and bypass Tim's whenever possible. But we'll see, I guess.

Timmy's in Commerce Place is basically Emmonton's homeless day shelter.

For sure. Top_Dawg is surprised they haven't opened up more all along Jasper.

Yeah, Top_Dawg doesn't drink coffee but he can tell from outside that Credo is a total coffee snob cornholio fest.

I don't go there much because it is not the closest one for me, but yeah I kind of noticed that when I did go there. I don't know if that has anything to do with potentially opening a location in the Sobey's space, or not. Maybe Tims want more upscale, but it is just a couple of blocks down so I am thinking the 102 St crowd could fairly easily just shuffle down the street.

Correct! Peak cornholio. Tasty coffee though.

You get to be a cornholio! Everyone gets to be a cornholio!

In all seriousness, if for example 1 in 6 coffees Credo customers purchase go to Tim's, that could be the difference between them being in business and not. Hopefully I'm wrong about the demand side.

Credo is more of a neighborhood hangout so I'm not worried about them. I'm more worried about District and Lock Stock, both of which cater to the same office crowd that this new Timmys will be targeting.

I'm a bit late to the party but has anyone tried Monument in the Mayfair? Is it any good? What do they serve? Is it like a Tim's competitor?

Crazy how people are still buying Tims coffee. Try that stuff black and then tell me it tastes good. The independent shops downtown should have no problem competing with the Tim's swill.

I think the real competition for Credo is with new cafes like Monument, Coffee Bureau, Lockstock etc. However, Credo continues to serve consistently good coffee and baked goods and people will pay for quality. They have a loyal following and I think they will be fine. I think there is room for many more cafes including chains downtown as the market continues to grow. Personally, I'm not a huge Timmys fan, but I think it would be great for activating that space.

    Puzata Hata? Ukrainian Pizza Hut?

There used to be a Ukrainian restaurant on the corner where Planet Organic is today. It was there quite a few years but I only went there near the end. Interesting interior - think "Ukrainian Alpine Lodge." Food was OK as I remember, and I and my date at the time come from old-timer Ukey families with Babas that made all the usual stuff and some of the few exotics that made it over from the old country (wild mushrooms in cream, some uncracked grain-in-cream dish). I don't know of another specifically-Ukraine restaurant since. I probably wouldn't dine there unless I could see a menu that didn't look like all the old standards I know already, because while filling, it's pretty bland.

But, it may be time to have a proper Ukey place again.

^ Taste of Ukraine, they're still around but they moved to St Albert when they were booted out for that redevelopment.

^^It always surprises me that there are so very, very few options for Ukrainian dining in Edmonton. Do people just consider it "home food" here? That's the only theory I've got.

There are dozens of organizations hosting dinners with pierogis, sausages, cabbage rolls etc for fundraisers. I usually get my fix at family functions so I haven’t been to any for years, but I imagine a lot of Ukrainians go to these events to socialize.

The problem with that space is size. It's too big. Break it into 3 smaller units.

I was really underwhelmed by McLeod in my one visit there. Peak time on a Saturday evening, wasn't too busy, servers didn't look too busy but also didn't seem like they were too interested in the customers. Food and drinks weren't too memorable.

Basically, wasn't motivated to go back. Looking back, felt the exact same about Stage 104 when it was open too. Both had so much potential, really love the spaces they were in, but experience left a lot to be desired.

Something similar to Dorinku would do well in that space. More neon and Japanese trope though, light that sucker up.

I have and during our review at the facade committee meeting comments were provided to better integrate the new with the old.

Anyone know when the Commerce Place food court renos is finishing? It was supposed to reopen in November but it's now December. I was at Lorenzo's and I overheard the girl in the sushi place next door expressing her frustrations with having to move out of ECC and now with this reno. Oh, and looks like another Indian place is opening in this food court.

The Needle closed permanently. For sale for $2.5m. Also, it may have already sold, hearing a dance club.

They encased a lot of possibly-rare old vinyl from local artists in resin to decorate the place for, what, 2 years?

^ In case you haven't seen it in the news, they are closed because there is an allegation of sexual assault that was directed on an employee from one of the owners

I think the business was doing quite well, but as you can imagine, the entire local music industry turned their back on the venue given the seriousness of the situation. Bands were canceling gigs, people were boycotting shows, employees were quitting. It was a quick free fall.

Noticed that the Cafe Da Gama has closed down on RHW (north side of Phipps-McKinnon). The road closures due to Enbridge Place construction probably didn't help matters.

It was the landlord in this case, not the lessee. They are reworking the main floor.

Great location for a restaurant with a great patio, and Sherlocks feels isolated right now. I hope whoever takes that space doesn't squander it.

As mentioned in the Live Venue thread, looks like a jazz club called Brass Tacks is opening - or is open - in the former Brittany's space on 97 St. Can't find anything on the www yet though.

When I stopped by the London Drugs in Oliver Square, I asked them about the renovations that's been happening since the late summer. I was told phase I will open early next month, then phase 2 until May.

I saw a crew taking what looked to be core samples at rexall on jasper ave and 118 street last week.

Has anyone heard of any movement on this property? With the parking lot, it's a great lot for redevelopment

I had noticed in the past couple of weeks they were drilling all along Jasper avenue. No idea why they would drill in the middle of the road.

Interesting finishing choices, don't mind it, looks fresh, but the cheap tile doesn't really go with the rest of the building.

I used to go to the old food court regularly years ago, when it was newer it seemed more upscale than the other food courts. The new one while brighter and more modern style does seem cheaper looking, which it too bad. I also recall the old one was often full at lunch time - if the seating is reduced it will be more of a nightmare at the busy times. I think cheaping out on the seating might be a bit short sighted, if people see it is too busy and just try avoid it.

There seems to be more of the counter seating. I think this is because there's always a large number of solo diners taking up a 2-seat or 4-seat table. Most of the tables are near the windows.

BTW the Indian place is still not open yet.

Haven't been to Commerce Place for a while but the seating was quite dense compared to the new layout or are they planning to put in more tables?

SDM's right - more solo seating was needed. It was waaaaay too tight in there before, loosening things up is a good idea. For all of it's deficiencies it's the 2nd best food court downtown because of the window seats.
