EDMONTON, AB – The newest in a chain of independently branded but corporately affiliated brewpubs in Alberta will be opening soon in Edmonton.
Campio Brewing is the newest project from Bear Hill Brewing, which already operates Jasper Brewing in Jasper, Banff Avenue Brewing in Banff, Last Best Brewing in Calgary, and Wood Buffalo Brewing in Fort McMurray.
Set to be located in the former Characters Restaurant at 10257 105 St. NW, Campio will be opening its restaurant, bar, and retail shop later this year.

What's happening with Holt Renfrew? Are they closing up their Edmonton store for good?

Our guess is for downtown Edmonton, you'd only realistically secure one of these, provided the right space is available for an urbanHome Hardware store. Apple likely to choose Kingsway over downtown, Uniqlo seeks "A-malls", Simons lacks funds, Ikea has other market priorities.

With Zenari's vacating Manulife Place and Holt Renfrew exiting in early 2020, there may be room, but will there be the shoppers?

Very interesting responses to Ian`s poll by Retail Insider.

Yeah... but take the Retail Insider replies with a grain of salt.. they are redneck cowboy PRO-Calgary Calgarian reporters that dont necessarily report the best towards edmonton rather on the contrary seem to promote calgary as this super high end nouveau-Toronto...especially that Craig Patterson columnist.

Holts is closing? Is it moving? I don't go there as often as I did..but still, they carry some lovely lines..

LV is moving to WEM, as they did in Calgary to Chinook from the Core Holt's, but the future has yet to be written.

That said, the Retail Insider is a nice guy who certainly shows his colours on his sleeve and often parallels a story, but does not often lead it.

    What is "LV"?

I also note that those Retail Insider tweets appear to be deleted.

^I consider it bad form to delete without issuing a tweet explaining why. Like, do we consider this a retraction? What hot garbage.

Likewise with Tiffin - hope their opening doesn't extend past "Winter 2018"

Had lunch there today. Great pizza and it was packed when I left (just before noon). Many people were trying the outside doors, which are locked. Current entrance is via the office tower.

There's been quite a bit of construction happening in the tower lobby of that building on Jasper Ave south between 104 and 105 Streets.

Now yes it was noon hour, but I was pretty impressed how very busy both of these businesses were. I didn't bother going into either of them for my own lunch because the lines were too long. Glad to see people are responding to these two new restaurants.

I go there often and the lobby is brighter, so I think its an improvement. However, its still a kind of odd layout with the elevators to the side, but that is not something that can easily be changed. It is a big space but still seems sort of empty and cold right now. I hope they add some seating in the lobby for people waiting. Maybe that will happen at the end of the reno. The Shoppers is an improvement too, although I miss that back hall to connect to 104 street, which allowed me to stay inside when it was cold.

I am trying to remain positive but the business model of the Cora there doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The other seven Cora locations are well positioned in each suburban quadrant, including Sherwood Park and St Albert. You pretty much have to live within downtown for this to be the most easily accessible location. Even then, when it's a Sunday morning and you're loading up the family, most will figure why deal with parking downtown (even if the Days-Inn is providing it free) when you could go to the nearest ample-parking strip mall locale.

I hope I am dead wrong. Maybe the hotel customers and breakfast-for-lunch patrons will be enough to make it sustainable.

The other locations often seem to have lineups and people up meet there. So maybe this will attract those willing to pay parking to avoid a lineup. Being more central might help thise coming from different parts of town to meet up.

There are also multiple hotels in the area, workers and a good amount of residents. Most people I speak with were unaware that it is there. I suppose the other consideration is that there are multiple options within a 5-10mins walk for breakfast.

Sources say that Louis Vuitton constitues about half of all retail sales at Holts in downtown Edmonton, and that its loss would be catastrophic for the store, not to mention for high-end retailers in the downtown core generally. Staff at Louis Vuitton in Edmonton said that the West Edmonton mall store will open in July, and the downtown Edmonton Holt Renfrew concession will close in December of this year. The future of Holts in Edmonton is even more uncertain now.

Unfortunately thats what has happened to our downtown due to the marquee location of WEM.

and no scary people on the street

I work in small rural town in northern Alberta and you can't pay people from these places to step foot in downtown Edmonton, its too scary and they have people asking for spare change and they just refuse to go to and avoid downtown when they go to the big mean city. WEM is all they want to go to and see.

Yet how many cities the size of Edmonton or larger would those same people you refer to be wanting to step foot into. And honestly there may be few panhandlers here and there (not unlike most big cities) but all the times I've been downtown lately I haven't had anyone approach me for money.

I know its just funny these people are scared of a place they have never gone, maybe driven through at most. Other than it feeling a little dead its not that scary.

I’d guess that what’s going to happen is just a post-boom replay of the 1980s/90s. The high margin luxury goods companies sweep in to grab as much easy money as possible and then when the bubble bursts they downsize and eventually desert the city. That said, WEM might be offering up some very attractive lease rates so if they can get some synergies out of pulling together several branded stores maybe they’ll create a new attraction in and of itself. (Maybe something a downtown building could have done.)

Well, obviously there are enough people who enjoy rock hard cardboard melons for Cora to open 6 locations in the city (+2 in St Albert and Sherwood Park)

Cora is essentially a higher-end Denny's. I don't mean that in a bad way either, it is a nice place. Food is fine and good serving sizes for the price point.

LV moving into West Ed has been a long time coming, especially with LV moving from Holt to Chinook in Calgary. WEM has been pushing hard to maximize their luxury retail strip in that upper corridor.

This is the mostly-empty Cora's that took over from the mostly-empty Albert's (Smitty's?) that was there before? Sounds like their brand alone isn't the draw they thought.
I am in no way entitled to your opinion...

Your name means nothing when you locate yourself onto a street that has horrible activation from 104ave to the legislative area. The entire strip is bad fung shui as there is no beginning or ending to to it. Fully built out, the street will reverse some of that negativity but not completely due to its configuration. Now, how do we discuss the horrible energy coming from the Arlington sight? Can we replace the "Harlem Project" art piece at that corner already?

LV is turning into a "mall" store these days as is Gucci. I don't what it's like in Edmonton but in Vancouver, Gucci sneakers are very common, mainly with the Asian kids. They are like $1200. Same in Australia from what I saw, a lot of the Asian kids wore the Gucci sneakers.

^ No it is a brunch/lunch place in Holland Plaza. The location is...not great...but the name has certainly gotten it's share of praise/recognition, and so it always seems to be packed even though it is in the middle of an industrial area. Just making the point that if your offering is something special, the people will find you.

The whole redeveloped plaza is great and as far as the area, it would be greater to see a broader use range in some of these lower density industrial areas.

Absolutely. It also provides an opportunity for local businesses that can't afford the lease rates of a more "desirable" area when they start their business. But...if they can grow their name and following there, maybe there are opportunities to expand into the 124/DT/Whyte areas in the future.

It doesn't hurt to have some great places off the beaten path a bit. And the Airport Road industrial area is going to be an up and coming place over the next decade or so. Lots of very, very old and tired buildings that are either ripe for a major repurposing, or for demolition and redevelopment.

Montreal Hot Dogs has closed in the SW corner of 105 St/104 Ave. Lease dispute.

In fact, most of the retail is empty in that building. Not sure if that's due to pedestrian traffic, tinted windows, incompetent landlord, or some combination of the above.

You can never know if anything is open with the blacked out windows. It's a disaster of a podium. They should reglaze it with transparent windows and alter the signage set up.

It's just a terrible spot. And the Telus building does just enough to deter people from venturing west of 104th street.

Also, Cosmic Pizza seems to be holding its own though. Always people there 2am

Regarding Cafe Linnea...it's operated with a partnership with Duchess which has a 124th street presence. The Duchess brand has certainly helped with the popularity of the cafe.

The south side of 104th ave around the retail of that podium is an awful pedestrian experience with the slender sidewalk that has no buffer from the road where cars whip by and extremely noisy buses roar by continually. The empty lots west and the brick fortresses east don't help either. Then there is almost no free public parking.

Knew a guy who worked at the Nottingham cigar shop in that podium also. Apparently that location bleeds money badly but the owner spent so much on fit out (it is quite nice inside with the full walk in humidor and a mezzanine for vape stuff) he's holding out for awhile+the other locations earn enough to keep everything afloat.

    Minor Retail Store
    EUVRO STYLE LTD.
    10011 - 116 STREET NW
    299854371-002
    ISSUED
    Dec 06, 2018

A new women's clothing boutique, has opened up next to Harrow Salon, around the corner from Nello's Downtown, facing 116 st, in Academy Place. The business permit says Euvro Style; there's no sign up, so I'm not sure if that's a spelling error on the business license, or stylized spelling. It looks like European-style club clothing to me

I'm not sure if there's enough foot traffic in the area to drive this, but we'll see. They might get enough business and word of mouth from the salon to make a go of it. The map/ art print shop that used to be here moved out to the west end.

^And they did shutter their "Provisions" store, too, pretty early on in their Holland Plaza run. Although that was a massive space and conceptually ill-advised, I think.

Local Omnivore is on the west side of the plaza. There is a decent wine shop next door and Duchess has a production kitchen attached to Linnea. Its a very well redo of an old industrial warehouse.

Teddy's has a soft re-opening with a grand re-opening on March 1. They've been closed for the past year due to a flood.

I am not so sure the bus stop part is a consideration. I would argue modest cosmetic improvements to the podium, and the right tenants would attract people, tapping into even the huge market just across the street. I am sure they would emerge from the safety of those halls for an appealing retailer/F&B outlet, etc.
