Over a month has gone by since CTV Edmonton axed local amateur sports (as well as solid pro Greyson Knutson in the process). To date, the move has not sent me over to Global and probably never will. I'm a CTV guy through & through and apparently pretty much anything short of the dismissal of the iconic Daryl McIntyre won't change that.

They must have punted Darcy Seaton as well because the only people doing the sports news are Adam Cook and Nahreman Issa.

Darcy seems to be expunged from the CTV Edm website.

It's too bad the sports was axed - sport guys always have the most personality in a newscast. But CBC seems very amateur and Global very US-style plastic, so CTV is it for me. Losing local sports coverage is a real shame for local sports groups, ending a long involvement with the community.

She was on the other night too so she's still around.

Meanwhile, Carla Turner, the weekend weather lady, is showing a baby bump so she may not be long for the station.

Next week, Erin Isfeld starts co-anchoring with D-Mac in a new studio, Carmen Leibel becomes the 5 PM anchor and Joel Gotlib is going back to reporting.

Did CTV do another round of cuts to the news room? Seems to be fewer reporters on the beat the last couple of months.

I've noticed on holidays like long weekend Mondays, there is no CTV Edmonton News at 5pm. Yet CTV Calgary will have their 5-6pm newscast.

    What gives?

Shanelle Kaul's last day as the weekend news anchor was tonight. She is going to her hometown Toronto to work at CP24 (CTV affiliate). Bianca Millions gave her a gift bag at the end of the 6pm newscast.

I wonder what will happen with Bianca once Carla Turner returns from her maternity leave

I like how in the latest CTV Edmonton ad the last story is being repeated by 3 reporters - the first two who left the station.

Can't believe I missed this, but former CTV Edmonton Sports Reporter Bryan Mudryk is now doing play-by-play for the Habs and Sens on TSN's regional NHL broadcasts. He actually sounds good doing it, too!

^ Bianca Millions has done the odd newsreading bit, after her weather slot, along with Nicole Weisberg on the late news. Maybe she's transitioning into more of a news role.

Carla's 2nd day back was much better although she has this habit of pointing at the camera.

It is nice to see Nicole Weisberg anchor the weekend news again. Sarah Plowman was rather awkward at the task.

^ Then you get the gasping Nancy Carlson with her stilted delivery and frantic gasp for air at the beginning of each sentence. Turn away from the TV and just listen.

Agreed. I also like the appointment of Nahreman Issa as the full-time anchor of the News at Noon. She's an absolute natural in that role.

Jonathan Glasgow and Dez Melenka have left the station. Glasgow has a new reporting gig in Denver, while Melenka has started the co-working space Creative Hive in the west end.

Jonathon Glasgow made so many mistakes reading the news. He really struggled some days. Nahreman Issa is very comfortable.

Sarah Plowman still hasn't gotten any better. It's like she's reading her teleprompter material for the very first time.

Meanwhile, Matt Woodman has regular trouble pronouncing certain words, putting the stress on the wrong syllable, like English isn't his first language, but not in the usual ways that English newcomers do. It's very odd. I wrote to the CTV News director to suggest that someone tell him how to pronounce "fentanyl" - it doesn't rhyme with "alcohol." He seems to have learned, sorta.

I had to shut off CTV News about 25 minutes into their broadcast. Sarah Plowman (who was filling in for Nicole Weisberg) was absolutely atrocious and should just stick to being a reporter. Carla Turner was not much help either as she flubbed her way through her weather segments (a rarity for her).

Last night at 6 with the always-solid Weisberg anchoring, Plowman was on set to do a live read report. Yikes! The woman is simply unable to properly read stuff out loud. She would be far better-suited for an off-air role.

It's like she's seeing the script for the very first time, and some of the words for the first time in her life. Matt Woodman is noticeably the same, like English isn't his first language. Sometimes head-scratching mispronunciations.

Woodman's reading isn't perfect but I can't put it in the same category as Plowman's which is shockingly bad.

I've noticed Erin Isfeld slip up her words here and there. Rob Williams can be quite bad at reading the teleprompter, which is one of the reasons why I hardly bother with CTV Morning Live anymore.

I would say that Cory Edel is their most redeeming on-air personality on CTV Morning Live.
Jordan Hertner is fun and has lasted much longer than the merry-go-round before her, but for the most part her traffic reporting leaves much to be desired.

I had to shut off CTV News a couple of minutes ago - 18 minutes in, and they have a full story about an overabundance of deer in New Brunswick. No, I'm sorry Nicole and Carla.

^ I found the story interesting. They can't fill the whole news hour talking about pipelines, Pride Week, and motorcycle fun rides.

p.s...I haven't seen Sarah Plowman anchor the newscast for weeks. Did they take her off that gig?

It was Sunday evening, on a slow local news day. They always pad the end of the broadcast with some human interest story, often from a CTV affiliate.

Joey Slattery is anchoring tonight's newscast but he keeps flubbing his lines. I'm starting to think there's major issues with teleprompters.

There was the other night, and it was the longest dead air I've ever heard on CTV 11:30. Everything seemed to melt down over about 20 seconds and he was caught right in the middle of it. There was also a mis-cued upper-left graphic so I figured it was a switcher error.
I am in no way entitled to your opinion...

To her credit, Sarah Plowman has improved greatly as an anchor. This past week she was anchoring the late night news.

I'll reserve judgement on Plowman's return until I see her anchor again because, to be honest, the hiring of Slattery had my hopes up that we wouldn't.

Daryl McIntyre is leaving CTV, his last day is Sept 13.

^Now that's a shame. Darryl delivers the news so well. I hope whoever they hire to replace him knows the shoes they are filling.

Erin Isfeld will anchor the desk on her own. She''s a fabulous anchor.

Please, for the love of Christ, do not let Joey Slattery take over as the 6 PM weekday anchor from Daryl McIntyre. If you think Sarah Plowman is bad, this guy is atrocious. I lasted about 15 minutes into tonight's broadcast before I had to shut off the television.

Kudos, SDM. You lasted longer than me. Two fluffs in the first 15 seconds, and he was gonzo.

That's cruel, inaccurate and childish. For starters, Joel is not a crackhead. He was addicted to prescribed pain killers.
He beat the addiction and he's now volunteering to help other people break addictions.

Darryl rocks....what's he going to do now? I Know Ganam - style was a bit flippant when his co-chair asked what he's gonna do

They updated story. Involuntary. So he was told he was too expensive and to move on.

You're right, they definitely changed it since its initial publication:

McIntyre worries the gutting of journalism leads to “a less-informed public that’s easily manipulated.” But this is a concern for another generation of journalists. An involuntary buyout at age 55 means McIntyre has time to pursue a different career, though he is blessedly free of plans.

A lot of people would be willing to hire Daryl in a heartbeat, if he hasn’t already been hired.

The last 1/2 hr of last night's newscast was dedicated to Daryl McIntyre. No tears at all - in fact, he was stoic and humorous all the way through.

^ Bit of a stalwart, Daryl. I liked him. So who's not in the photo? Slattery, Woodman, Rishaug. Any others?

He's obviously a lot of fun off camera. He has his acreage, his horse, no rush Daryl, enjoy your time. You'll be missed.
