Default Re-designation of Victoria High School

Victoria High School Attendance Area Re-designation Meeting

    Victoria School
    Wednesday, January 23, 2013
    6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

What neighbourhoods would be affected by the proposed change?
The Alex Taylor, Delton, H.A. Gay, McCauley, McDougall, Norwood, Parkdale, Prince Rupert,
Queen Mary Park, Riverdale and Spruce Avenue neighbourhoods would be designated to
Eastglen School for high school programming.

The Edmonton Municipal Airport area would be designated to Queen Elizabeth School for high
    school programming.

The McKay Avenue and Oliver neighbourhoods would be designated to Ross Sheppard for high
    school programming.

When would the change take effect?
Senior high school students from the above neighbourhoods would be designated to Eastglen
School, Queen Elizabeth High School or Ross Sheppard School for the 2013-2014 school year.

What is the reason for the proposed change?
Currently, the high school program at Victoria School is the only program at Victoria School with
a designated attendance area. This proposed change would align the high school program with
the junior high and elementary programs at Victoria School. As well, Victoria is a school with
entrance criteria and the proposed removal of the Victoria attendance area would align pre-enrolment processes with the elementary and junior high programs at the school.

Could students still choose to attend Victoria School?
With Edmonton Public Schools’ open boundary system, students will continue to have the
choice of schools where space is available and where they meet any entrance criteria. If a
student is already enrolled at Victoria school at the time of a designation change, they would be
guaranteed continuity of programming at Victoria school for the duration of their programming.

Central McDougall Community League Notice of EPSB Public Meeting
Edmonton Public Schools Proposal to Change High School Entrance Policies – Victoria School of the Arts

    When: Wed Jan 23, 2013 6-8pm
Where: Victoria School of the Arts (10210 108 Ave)

What is the policy to attend Victoria School of the Arts High School program today?
Students who enter high school and live in Central McDougall and surrounding neighborhoods can enter Victoria School of the Arts, whether or not they are considered to be Arts students, or pass an audition or entrance exam.

What will change if this proposal is accepted?
All students who wish to enter high school at Victoria School of the Arts will have to pass an entrance exam and/or audition to attend the school, regardless of where they live. Students who do not pass this exam will have to attend Eastglen School, or choose another school instead of one close to where they live.

How far away from Central McDougall is Eastglen School?
EastGlen School is approximately 5.5km from Central McDougall by car. It is a 30 minute ride by public transit from Central McDougall to Eastglen School.

How will students get to and from school?
High School Students who must attend Eastglen School will have to be transported to and from school by car or public transit, at the expense of the student and family.

How many neighborhoods will be affected by this proposed change?
Victoria School is the only Edmonton Public High School near the neighborhoods of Central McDougall, McCauley, Oliver, Alex Taylor, Delton, Norwood, Parkdale, Prince Rupert, Queen Mary Park, Riverdale, Spruce Avenue, McKay and Spruce Avenue. It is also the nearest public high school to the airport lands.

    What can I do?
Come to the meeting and let your voice be heard on this issue. Encourage your friends and neighbors who live in the affected neighborhoods to come as well. The decision is not yet made. Your voice matters!

I am wondering if you are living in the current boundary, if your elementary and junior high age children can enroll "automatically". If so, if is may be policy that they will be entitled to enroll in high school program.

Personally, I like auto-enroll for population living within boundaries.

It shouldn't be a hardship to travel to Scona, Ross Shep or Eastglen. I went to Vic in the late 70s and travelled by bus from near 127 St. and 137th Ave.

Posted the Central McDougall notice on the Vic Comp Alumni Facebook group. Hopefully it'll get some discussion.

Nope, it doesn't matter if you live across the street from Victoria.

All kids have to go through an application process to test their "fitness" for the school, as it is "arts" based.

I should have said; if you are living in the boundary and your elementary or Junior high age children are enrolled at Vic could they enroll to high school automatically? Is there currently testing for elementary and jr high entrance - really?
