The JW did its last pours on mechanical it looks like and is topped out at 56 storeys or 191m. Stantec is about to overtake it and has around 16-17 floors left to go en route to 251m.

Well a city is collection of buildings from different eras, which I think helps make it interesting and unique. The 70's look of downtown Edmonton reflects when a lot of buildings were built, but as some are renovated or changed and new buildings are added, that look becomes less dominant or noticeable. Even City Centre itself has been changed a bit recently, perhaps just nibbling at the corners so far, but the Shoppers Drug corner and the corner of the MNP Tower have been recently nicely updated a bit too. Also, if we wait 10 or 20 years or so the style from that era will probably be much more in fashion again.

Things do come in and out of fashion. I have been around long enough to throw away 60's era furniture and then watch it come back into fashion 10 years later and those beards I remember seeing everywhere in the mid to late 70's, I should have prayed that they didn't ever make a come back, but they sure did. Divine intervention may be the only thing that stops it, so pray if you wish. Every generation or era thinks it has reached the pinnacle of style and fashion only to see it superseded, often by their grandparents style.

Not sure if the CCM will be a design which will make its way back to the forefront again.

I do lament the loss of our brutalist art gallery. The bunker like appearance had a sense of form which CCM does not.

What stands out to me in that shot is how the Encore tower will fill a gap and block out the view of the refinery (look for the smokestack!)

We also like to whine about the lack of glass. But there's a lot of character captured in that shot. It would be a different result with glass towers.

Encore will not block out the refinery. It will, however, block out a lot of Manulife. That smoke stack is part of our history. I'm not ashamed of that as that is " bread and butter" for many. As per the concrete jungle, that is part of our history as well which will blend in with future developments. If we keep wanting to change that, it is no different than all the those demolished historical structures that we cry over today.

It's hard to tell on the time-lapse cameras because of perspective bias, but it looks like Stantec still has at least another two floors to go before it surpasses JW in height (192m) for the new crown of Edmonton's tallest. At the rate they are pouring floors, Stantec could take the crown by the end of next week.

Somewhere between 2-3 floors away, and I'll say two weeks away from even par.

Pretty much what I would predict as well. It may possibly be late September.

Driving down Baseline Road in Sherwood Park, I think the Marriott looked slightly taller. I think that could change with the next floor on Stantec.

Yeah, different angles will give different height perspectives. Some angles make " The Pearl " look like the tallest structure although at 119 m, it's far from being so.

From the views I got yesterday, Stantec is 1 floor shy from JWM. Once the slab is poured, it will surpass JWM

I’m sure you can see the Stantec from the airport, based on the downtown shot of the airport.

I don't think there are any more arguments over which building is taller now. Stantec added a 55th storey.

Stantec Tower now the tallest building in Edmonton — and it’s still growing
    https://globalnews.ca/news/4225798/s...g-in-edmonton/

For a mere two weeks, the JW Marriott tower was the tallest building in Edmonton — but that title has now been stolen by its neighbour.

The Stantec Tower in the city’s downtown Ice District has now reached 54 storeys (197 metres), making it Edmonton’s tallest tower — and it’s still under construction.

It will continue to grow three metres each week, to rise to a total of 251 metres. Once complete, the Stantec Tower will be 66 storeys high, making it the tallest building in the country outside Toronto.

“You have to dream big. If we want to be a little city, we dream small. If we want to be a big city, we dream big, and this is a big idea.” - Mayor Stephen Mandel, 02/22/2012

The streetscape and area around Stantec and JW could use some more trees and greenery in a big way.

Do you know how many more floors are left? Assuming the average floor is 3.6 m in height that would indicate 14-15 more floors, 12 usable, and 3 mechanical.

The graphic is highly deceiving and outright wrong.

It makes Edmonton look like it has most of the tallest buildings when in fact it it will only have two over 150 meters.

This is a list of the tallest buildings in Canada. As of December 2017 there are a total of 133 completed and under construction buildings in Canada with an official height of 150 m (492 ft) or more. Greater Toronto has 86 (Toronto 83, Mississauga 3), Calgary has 19, Metro Vancouver has 14 (Burnaby 7, Vancouver 6, Surrey 1), Montreal has 11, Edmonton will have 2 by 2018 (they are both currently under construction), and Niagara Falls has 1.

Toronto has 6 buildings taller than Stantec plus the CN Tower. EPCOR at 149m does not even rank in the 133 other buildings taller than the 150m minimum threshold.

Dumb question, but I have to ask as I dislike heights... That green railing on the edge. Is that the only thing protecting the workers from falling ? It does not 'look' that sturdy ( I'm sure it is...) but thinking of walking around at the top with a slight breeze, or if somebody tripped ... ughhhh.. even thinking about it makes my heart beat faster !

    Actually not yet...

We used to have height restrictions due to the old airport. You can see how that stymied growth for over 25 years.

Oh you really expect far too much of the local Global Station, its very difficult for the remaining one eyed monkey running everything (after all the cut backs) to do all the tasks. We are lucky they got the building names, heights and cities correct. I think the monkey has at least mastered wikipedia and google.
