    Default Alberta Avenue Photo Walk

After a few decades of decline Alberta Avenue is on the rebound. Those of us who grew up there knew in our hearts that it was simply too good a place to merely wither away. But the demographic trends needed to work its way through and as many of us who grew up there moved away it would take time for new blood to move in reinvigorate the neighborhood. To those who stayed and to those who have moved in to invest their time and money, a big thanks.

As a mature neighborhood there are obviously many older homes, many of which have been lovingly maintained. This is a small sample of the some of the more interesting homes from just one street running through the breadth of Alberta Avenue.

118th Avenue was once a busier and more vibrant place than it is now. Perhaps as the rents on Whyte Avenue increase, small business owners will migrate here to take advantage of the new street improvements and make 118th Avenue the hub of activity that it once was.

None of the businesses I remember as a child are still here with the exception of, amazingly, Nolan Drugs on 89th Street. The Avenue Theater was once a great neighborhood movie house, I remember seeing Blade Runner and Dune there.

Since the remake of 118 Ave, I now include it as one of my summer weekend urban walks - an amazing turn-around.

^Yup, definitely an improvement although the past couple of years and seen some gains and losses. I noticed that my childhood drugstore, Nolans, is gone (no surprise I guess) and a few more empty buildings. So sad to see the Avenue theater boarded up, having a neighborhood entertainment venue is such a big plus.
