    Default Scotch talk

I was recently lured into the scotch tasting trend, but I think I will be having it regularly as a nightcap.

I love Oban - where I can buy a bottle?

What are some other good scotches to try?

I haven't made it to the Bothy yet but I might be doing so soon.

Brothy sounds more fun than the Bothy.

Which shops carry the best selection of scotch?

    The bothy...

Honestly, go in at on off time and tour, discover, learn.

That said, devines can assist and has a decent selection.

Maybe we should do a C2E or SSP get-together at the Bothy soon!

I just bought a bottle of 12-year-old Cragganmore and enjoying some sips right now. I was at the 123rd St store but they were sold out of Oban, and both a sales rep and a customer recommended Cragganmore .

Oban is quite good, and pretty easy to find at most random liqour stores. The catch is getting a good price

Balvenie has a 14 year "Caribbean Cask" that's around the same price, but is really very good in my books.

Picked up a 1L bottle of 12 Year Caol Ila at the Zurich airport for 60 francs this summer.

Agreed. MacAllan, Aberlour, Glenmorangie and Springbank have been my favourites lately.

I like Dalwhinnie 15 myself but the best I've had was Glenmorangie Signature Series. Goes for 200/bottle but if you get a chance to sample it somewhere you will likely not be disappointed.

Setting aside their (dreadfully wrong) airport politics - Chateau Louis Liquor store is among the acknowleged best places to find single malt scotch:

Chateau Louis has probably the best selection in town. Sherbrooke has a surprisingly good stock for a small store, many high end selections. The little place in the Plus 15 between TD and the hotel also has a surprising selection, especially gift packs and smaller bottles.

Yeah I'm kinda hesitant to support any business that earns Don Koziak any money.
I'm also going to look at Vinomania because I think the owner has featured scotch on the Global morning show.

Liquor Select on 149st has regular tasting events that you can join for free if you're on the mailing list and respond in time. I've never been, but it seems interesting.

The Caol Ila (12 yr) has been my favorite as of late.

While I maintain a bottle of 19 year old Mortlach single malt for special occasions which I really enjoy. I like regularly to have a dram of" Famous Grouse" blended with just a bit of water to open it up. ( a big proportion of 5 million scots have the same approach)

With an Alberta twist , I also like to have a drink of Alberta Premium rye the same way. Just might be my working class roots.

All the brands you have been talking about are available at Liquor Depots, varies by store, but Jasper Ave and 109 St has a great selection. Wine and Beyond of course has an amazing selection of all alcohol related product

Who here likes Laphroaig? I find it a nice, peaty Islay single malt.

    And then there's Ardbeg.

But Bowmore, Glenmorangie, Talisker and Oban are others I find good, too.

I also know of a blended whiskey which I find quite nice drinking - Sheep Dip. It's made from 16 different malt whiskies, but it's quite nice and smooth.
Is there hope for Edmonton? Yes!!! The Oilers? Wait and see.

If I want a super peaty single malt, Laphroig is my go-to scotch.

And I don't mean that sarcastically - there are times I want that BIG peat taste.

Just like sometimes you want a big, oaky cabernet.

I've only ordered/tried a scotch once in my life - an hour after being in court dealing with my daughter's child custody case in 1998.

You know which place has a surprisingly good selection of Scotch? Jasper Liquor Merchants on the SW corner of Jasper Ave and 116 St. They were the only downtown store to carry Oban - City Cellars, Vinomania and Sunterra Wine Cellar were sold out, while DeVine didn't carry it at all.
