Yes, the forethought and degree of caliber on some Calgary projects sure sets them apart from that of Edmonton's! Nail on the head regarding the LRT, if you're gonna blow such a massive chunk of dough on the thing, why not spend a bit more and get it RIGHT!

I'm still not a fan of it, but it doesn't look as horrendous in person...it screams "cheap" in photos but in person that isn't the first impression. That's about all I can say in defense of this mess.
I just hope the interior is amaze-balls

Where is the grain and farm machinery stored?

Honestly, at this point, there is so much construction and mess downtown, including this place, it will be somewhat of a relief to finally have it finished and the area cleaned up, despite the appearance.

Now that I think of it, sort of does remind me of that. It looks better with the lights on and the part facing Churchill Square is better with more windows than the other sides. The west side with the metal cladding and smaller windows is a bit brutal, looks like a penitentiary.

The lights aren't helping. Still looks like a Tank/warehouse.

So much for this looking a lot different with the lights on.

What a horrible looking building for the DT. I mean it looks even worse than the previous exterior.

    This is basic architectural vandalism.

    Does the architect hate Edmonton?

Maybe they can just tarp the whole monstrosity with shrinkwrap and pretend "Metropolis" is still alive as a DT festival attraction..

That's the polite way of me saying put a huge bag over this.

hey, heres a positive. Least when the vandals tag this grey mausoleum it will automatically look better. hand out the free paint cans. get the kids out for an activity..

    Metropolis or maybe Modern Times.

    Actually neither. Instead Blade Runner.

The first scifi movie I noticed where the brightness of the prior set designs 2001 Space Odyssey, Star Trek, Space 1999, etc. went dull and dark.

    Abandoned Blade Runner

The warmth of the lights is due to the white balance adjustment from the digital camera. When dusk comes and it's overcast the light has a predominance of blue and the camera's firmware adjusts by accentuating the yellow.

The new Milner is resplendent in its battleship gray, the new battlestar Potemkin.

The siding wouldn't look so bad if the ribs weren't so prominent. If the panels were just separated by fine lines it might look better. Of course a more lustrous finish wouldn't hurt either.

Once the graffiti goes up it will transform the look.

Then when they bring in an international artist to paint a mural on it, the travel “experts” will love it.

You know seriously a mural or two could give this building hip, funky feel to it.

I'm all for handing the kids spray paint cans and beautifying this up like they are encouraged to do with the "greenshacks"

Yea as I noted as well, this thing is not as ugly in person, trying to find a good way to photo this building will really challenge photographers - just looks terrible and bizarre in photos.
That grey is just in photos....but you get a different feel in person

Agreed, looks much better in person.

As for the color grey, well, that color seems to be represented a lot in newer buildings.

Was on Granville Island in Vancouver on Saturday. Was a dark rainy grey day and the view of all condos with grey aluminum cladded buildings with the sea foam green windows was abysmal given how they all wash into one another from that point of view.

Be happy that our buildings have a variety of colors downtown.

Actually some colour would make it look more interesting. Some sort of graffiti wrap would be rather appropriate.

Or if we’re lucky Banksy will come and do an over night drive by paint job.

I’ll get used to it. And as I posted earlier I saw it while driving by and from the east from 97th St it looked pretty cool. So I don’t hate it but was hopeful for something I would consider beautiful, not just novel.

Plus I find the grey-on-everything fad VERY tiresome.

Trivia: apparently post-WWII, surplus grey was heavily used because it was cheap.

The interiors of those Quonset huts pictured must have been very inefficient. Excerpt as bunkhouses.

Probably the best shot of the library I've seen so far, albiet, fuzzy factor played a major role in this. The colors on the roof make it pop.

I guess I should have said: Id rather they let kids go to town with hundreds of big happy face stickers or something, following an extensive public consultation period involving all known and unknown stakeholders to make this officially sanctioned beautification project a successful endeavour to build within our citys youth a resiliency in the face of ugly architectural challenges...

How’bout when it’s covered in snow?

White glistening roof, narrow angular walls...

    I’m hopeful.

We just need one truly outstanding photo of it to flood the internet and glam up our city - before the real world photos come to dominate the world’s impression of Edmonton. The clock is ticking!

Don’t judge a book by its cover. Note that it’s not said the other way around, so obviously this means good cover designers are harder to come by than good writers.

    buildings aren't books.

buildings are art, sculpture, the very essence of our urban environment. they define us and we them.

we need four things to survive - air, food, water and shelter.

we could not even live and function where we do without buildings and most of them will outlive us. some of them will outlive our children and our grandchildren.

don't get me wrong, i'm also in love with books but buildings are not like books and their covers. a book can exist and bring joy without a cover. indeed a book can bring joy electronically with no physical form at all whereas a building cannot exist without its exterior.

regardless of its interior, a building's exterior is both our first and our last interaction with it, even if it's simply walking past.

that's why architecture and more particularly good architecture should be given much more attention than being treated simply as a cover. and that goes for architects even more than for the public as they of all people should know better.

The view of this Library is truly awful from the Shoctor Theater elevated vantage point. As if that wasn't for one moment even a thought that the ugliest elements of it would be from that vantage and lets pull all the ventilation and stacks and ugly roof right there.

The most nondescript view possible, of horror Milner is from the Citadel Theater view.

I can see the thought of where the ventilation is situated as its hidden from ground view. But its not well hidden at all from its neighboring view which is obviously, I would think, the main elevated view around that the most people are going to be seeing..

    Complete fail.

I think if they would have kept the windows from older designs and mostly horizontal panels it would have looked a bit better.
I find it hard to believe that the crushed beer can look is the best our city can do.

Playing devil's advocate for a moment, there is also the old saying that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", which has nothing to do with books and covers. And like songs, some that may be disliked in their infancy can become cult staples over time. Who knows.

Some people out there think those stupid shining balls near the Whitemud Fwy are a work of art.

For the record, I think it's ugly.

Well maybe some creative lighting will at least make it look a bit nicer at night.

I'm more concerned by how it will look during the DAY.
You have to dream big. If we want to be a little city, we dream small. If we want to be a big city, we dream big, and this is a big idea. - Mayor Stephen Mandel, 02/22/2012
