Interesting. And surprise surprise, turns out that the macho act was just a cover for another spineless worm at the top.

Uber: The scandals that drove Travis Kalanick out - BBC News

“Mr Kalanick's reputation for ruthlessness and machismo has led to some deeply uncomfortable reports about the culture inside Uber: with persistent stories about organisational sexism and disputes with drivers over their terms and with local authorities and taxi companies.”

^That's one side of the story. If I know anything at all about teenagers, its that there is probably another.

Yeah, the teen's version of the story doesn't really make sense to me.

What I wondered is why the kid didn't just stay in the car and call his Mom.

This is second hand so not sure of the source as I'm not on Facebook. Apparently the driver told him his $40 was enough to get him home but then the driver told him his money had run out he told him to get out the car. The teen had a direct debit card but did not realize he could have used that nor that he could have told the driver he would get the rest of the money when he got him home. The teen just got out the car hoping he could hitch a ride the rest of the way home. He said 5 cars past but non of them stopped so that's when he called his mum. His mum wanted the driver fired and said she will see how it pans out but is thinking of going to the police. Like I said I was told this by someone who said it was on Facebook so take that for what it is.

Regardless of the truth behind this story, it is time to replace old-school taxi meters with a GPS-based system that calculates fares in advance. It is a major advantage that Uber and similar services have over the taxi industry.

Hopefully the energy industry recovers soon so all the bad cab drivers can go back to work for the engineering companies.
