Now at 46 floors, it has surpassed Edmonton House in floor count.

Floor count is higher but the actual height is well past the Epcor Spires.

Truthfully without the photos from IanO, B.ike, Thomas H among others, this forum would be boring as f***. I really look forward to them.

Spires shouldn't count when considering a building's height. Only inhabitable or usable space should be counted. It's like taping a ruler to my manhood and saying I'm 12 inches long. It just doesn't work that way (IMO). Anyways, I digress...

Haha.. Agreed.. one skyscaper site gives Epcor a height of 137m which I believe to be more accurate. I never thought it to be the tallest . Spires should have to be more significant than that to factor it in to the overall height. eg. One World Trade Center . Still I'm iffy about as well.

Would be nice if Katz and Bezos were on the phone planning the tallest of the tall on the Baccarat site. Lol

^Someone on SSP posted a picture of what the tower potentially will look like. I can't seem to find the post and it was a while ago but from what I do remember of the post it sounds like there are potential renderings out there for the site already...

^^Can hardly wait to see plans for that site. Didn't Katz say it would be a centrepiece or something. Lots of work still on present projects but I would expect an announcement in '18 for sure.

You and I and I'm sure many feel the same way. He called it a "trophy tower" so there's that!

I'd say it's unlikely that we see anything on that lot for a few more years. They've applied to make it a parking lot, which doesn't suggest immediate redevelopment. They've still got a lot of work to do on their current towers, and it would make sense to wait on that remaining "prime" site they have until the market is a bit stronger - and until a few more things improve. I expect to see plans for a tower or two on the northern parcel before they build anything here.

If I were Kats I would be doing what I could to move the Remand centre to wellness centre repurposing along, and put healthy offers in on the Boyle Street Community Services building to help them fund their share of the new facility. Cynical, but the boost to the value of their Baccarat and MAcDonald Building values if the centre moved would be worth a significant overpay on the Boyle Street property itself.
    There can only be one.

I think it's the reason they did not want to pave and fix it up like the city wanted. Just too temporary. I'm thinking an announcement in '18 and construction starting in '19. Releasing an early plan would keep the city off their backs on the parking thing.

Now that I have a chance to comment... annoyed to see the pic three times in different threads. You could probably find a dozen other relevant threads to post it in if you look. Címon, I know you want to. Try keyword ďskylineĒ and youíll come up with several to choose from.

    Note the sarcasm.

Went and did some photography tonight to get my mind off things. A buddy of mine's plane went missing last weekend so I figured I'd burn some energy getting a couple dozen shots from around the city and the supermoon rising. Here's a shot.

There was no need to change that plaque. We are the City of Champions.

I was thinking about this the other day. It seems like manulife was just at that perch where you couldnt see it over the visible surroundings from a distance. I understand that downtown was limited in height due to the prox. of the old airport. Does this view from the horizon, and limitations by the old airport have anything in common?

    Curvature of the Earth.

"Sanity check: if you are 0 meters off the surface of the Earth (lying down really really flat), the horizon is 0 kilometers away. That makes sense — you’re tangent to the surface! So the first line sounds right.

Now imagine you are standing on a beach, looking out over the ocean to the horizon. Most people aren’t two meters tall, and your eyes are several centimeters below the top of your head. But let’s just say your eyes are two meters off the ground (maybe you’re standing on a small sand dune). In that case, your horizon is 5.1 km (3 miles) away. That also sounds about right to me.
But now let’s say you are in your hotel overlooking the beach, and on your floor your eyes are 20 meters off the ground. The horizon is then 16 km away, much farther than before. Good: the higher you are, the farther away the horizon should be."

    http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/ba.../#.WjeSOFQ-eV4
Using a horizon calculator and assuming nothing in the way, the following buildings would be visible from the following distances. Not exact but in the general ballpark

    Manulife (146 m) - 43.2 Kilometres
    JW Marriott (193 m) - 49.6 Kilometres
    Stantec - (251 m) - 56.6 Kilometres
    Aldrett - (285 m) - 60.3 Kilometres

    And for Comparison -
    CN Tower Toronto - (553.3 m) - 84 Kilometres
    Burj Khalifa -102.9 Kilometres

Not exactly what i was looking for. i was looking for the correlation between the visible height and the height restriction by the old airport if there is any. but interesting info regardless.

Not to mention the extra height for the mechanical penthouse. Is that another 3-storey equivalent?

I sure hope the mechanical penthouse has a great design and compliments the tower glazing and is not an eyesore. Fingers crossed.

The shade cast to the north will be offset by the reflection of sunlight to the south from the mirror glazing. What the tower taketh away in one direction, it giveth in the opposite direction, as per the pics in Ian's post #1854 yesterday.

Picture a gold panning... pan, floating above the airport: round, flat bottom, sloped sides. The bottom sat above the airport at an elevation of ~45m, with a radius of ~2.4km. Then it sloped up at 1:20 until it reached ~122m. But the runway approaches were wedges cut into the pan that had gentler 1:7 slopes. Except for downtown south of 105 Ave and east of 104 St where it sloped up much steeper to 150m. It's complicated:

Oliver was really restricted. The Hendrix would have had to be about 30m shorter.

It is really beginning to make an impact on the skyline. How many more floors until it tops out?

Someone said there were 7 floors left about a week ago so i assume itís still about thatís. Itís looking quite impressive in the skyline now. Hard to believe we still have taller towers yet to come.

This is awesome, thank you! Makes me curious cause it seems the line of slight (at the air tower) for planes lading se -nw would have been obstructed by downtown

Happy holidays everyone and all the best wishes in the coming year! Just arrived into the city a couple hours ago, the changes from the last time I was in town is that more striking....We have always been one of the big six major city in this country since I have been here since late 1979, but this is the first time we look like we are a part of that group. I'm really looking forward to the fruition of other towers to come in the central area overall. Even condo towers near Manulife's height contributes to that drastic tranformation we have experiened of late.

I enjoy seeing this tower from the Davis Station area. Quite interesting seeing the supports for the LRT and this in the background. Also interesting they didn't use the same glass on the podium all the way around. I really enjoy the effect and colour of the north-side glass more-so than the south-side / plaza facing podium. Talked to a lot of young expats and out-of-towners over the holidays and the state that the City's in today is really turning some heads and generating good talking points. This area and building has made a big impact on their mentality.

Yes, a couple of tall signature towers in a downtown core makes a huge difference on how people perceive a city and it's progress. Our skyline is and will become even more impressive in comparison to many larger, more populous US cities(Orlando and Tampa skylines are unimpressive) and be a solid 5th compared to other Canadian cities .(Tor, Van, Montreal and Calgary). I don't consider Winnipeg, Quebec,Ottawa or Mississauga (good progress there though) close to us . Just some observations.

We crush Orlando, Tampa (do like thier skyline), KC sucks, St.Louis is a joke, Phoenix has nothing over 25 floors - all more populous than us.

Fantastic as always @B.ike Thanks. From that vantage point, will tower B totally block Manulife and Encore block the view of Commerce Place ?

Looks like tower B will be right up the middle of Manulife and Commerce Place in this pic. Encore Will be split between Ultima and the old Enbridge.

Very impressive, and with Stantec topping out 13 stories taller - likely Edmonton's eventual, official photo.

Just one concern - 102 street will be quite the wind tunnel. Notice that Calgary's Stephen Ave Mall has steel artwork features that are apparently designed to mitigate just that problem.

    Do they work Moa?

Can't wait to see it top out. Also I really can't wait to see the sidewalk on the south side of 104 Ave reopened, which begs the question, I wonder how many people will begin dropping off people on that side of the road once the sidewalk is open again.

Indeed! Thank you to every contributors for their different angles! It truly puts in perspective how important these developments has done to the image of our city physically and psychologically with more to come and planned.

    Special note:

Thank you Thomas for those worldwind photos on all threads.! Incredible effort!
