    Default Parkdale-Cromdale Community Events and Programs

    Here's some upcoming events and programs brought to you by the Parkdale-Cromdale Community League:

    Events and notices

    The annual PCCL garage sale: Is on! May 30th and 31st from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. Have good quality items for resale? Interested in a table? Contact the league…

    Community swim The Commonwealth Community Recreation Centre will be closed to the public for six weeks so community swim will move to Eastglen (Sunday, 12pm to 2pm). The Commonwealth facility will be closed from May 27 to July 7 Edmonton hosts the FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament. The closure accommodates the international players and coaches, as well as various administration and security needs involved for the event and will reopen on July 8. The stadium will host 11 matches, including a semi-final and the battle for third place, at Commonwealth Stadium. Please let us know if you have any issues with the games and we can feed it back…

    PCCL Monthly meeting May 28 (7 pm to 9 pm): Join us as we put together a strategic plan for the league and the next year. Come share your ideas and find out more about what the league does in the community. Within our community there is a wealth of knowledge and experience which, if used in creative ways, can be channelled into collective action to achieve community goals. If you are a big picture thinker or a real game changer, come tell us what you think. And how we can make it a reality. Or better yet, get involved…

    Programs

    Kinnaird Ravine Play Rangers: It is important to teach children about nature and without knowing the importance of nature, children will not understand why we should value nature. Through our funding, this city led children`s program occurs every Friday, May 22 to June 19 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Meeting at the Sheriff Robertson Park and heading down the ravine teaching children about nature and the fun we can have in the outdoors. It is a drop in program so if running late and a wide range of activities are planned, including many games. There is a focus each week, including Orienteering Basics (how to use a compass, and what compasses do), Maps and bearing/bearing finding, GPS systems and Geo Caching, Nature walks, Bird boxes, Rocks and rock painting (is there gold or other diamonds down in the ravine?) and Fire building.

    Free singing, guitar and violin lessons: Free group music lessons, every Saturday at the Parkdale-Cromdale Community League Hall (11335 85 Street). Singing lessons run from 9 am to 10 am and guitar lessons from 10 am to 12 pm. Violin from 12 am – 1pm.

    Family Art Workshop: Diving into the wonderful world of art. Exploring a variety of materials and techniques in drawing, painting and sculpture. Free every Tuesday from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.

    Starting soon – Creative Writing Workshop: There are numerous reasons why someone would want to express a thought, opinion, or fact to other individuals through words. Creative writing can be used for entertainment, informative, or persuasive purposes. Free every Wednesday (starting mid-June) from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.

    The English as a Second Language program: Helping those in the community improve their English language skills, including FREE Parent-Tot classes. Every Wednesday and/or Friday from 9:15 am to 11:15 am.

    The Seniors Group: With bingo, cake and chat. Every Monday 10:30 am to 1 pm.

    Tango class: Drop in program bringing good grooves and smooth moves to those in community. Every Sunday, 6 pm to 8 pm. Cost is $5 (drop-ins welcome).

    The Brazilian Capoeira Academy: Joining the traditional fusion of martial arts and dance. Come see a demo of capoeira performances every Saturday from 1 pm to 2 pm. Programs throughout the week for all levels and children.

    Fantastic stuff. You guys are really turning it around there these last 25 years.

    A model of inner city revival.

    Lots and lots of hard work towards a great vision commended.
