A friend posted a video today of the atrium and said they're adding floor space on six floors between towers??

Her exact words were: "Wow. This scaffolding in the Scotia Place foyer is an epic feat of engineering. It's supported from the lower level food court, the main floor, the second floor and the third floor. Apparently they're adding six more stories between the two towers."

    Any info on this?

EDIT: Never mind. She followed up that her supposition was based on nothing but her trying to figure out what all the scaffolding was for. Dur dur dur.

Better than expected. I liked the gold but this is a good refresh. Can't wait for it to be completed along with the podium reconfiguration.

^ Although the image quality isn't very good, Greatest X's attachment in post #44 of this thread suggests to me that the granite is indeed being replaced.

Edit: tried to imbed Graetest X's attachment in this post but couldn't get it to work, so deleted it.

Only at the entrances. Everything else remains the same if I remember correctly from EDC.

The reason I ask is the existing granite does not look particularly nice with the new glazing...and now it seems some stays and some goes. Yikes!!

Edit: After a quick look at post 44 - I will withhold my criticism and hope for the best with the impact at the entrances.

The new cladding looks much better than the gold. For some reason I've never liked gold on any office tower.

Are they going to do anything with the mechanical blocks on top or will they stay the same?

My problem with gold cladding as we saw it here in Edmonton was that it was never variegated; solid gold on both Scotia and more egregiously Energy Square. Scotia had the two towers that helped to break things up via reflected shadow and light, but that solid cube on 106? Blah.

Makes one wonder why the effect isn't used? Even a random "crossword puzzle" style of pattern would be unusual and interesting, and can't be that much more expensive than a uniform finish, can it?

    - because that is aesthetically risky.

I personally would love it; but look how people on this forum have welcomed the Chateau Lacombe reclad.

I wouldn't want an entire downtown of striped or crossword gridded or other sorts of buildings. But one or two her and there adds variety. I'm thinking that Scotia Place is going to blend in a lot more than when it had the gold.

Good question. I was wondering about that myself.

I think those mechanical blocks form part of the building envelope and should match. I do recall when that there was a model of the original towers in gold and they were supposed also be in gold (at least based on the model). They ended up using those ugly gray panels and it looks like they do not plan to change them from what I can see. That is the most disappointing thing on this reclad so far.

I'm pretty sure those things will be enveloped to match the rest of the building and appear to be extra storeys on top. If you know what I mean.

Not a fan of the dark blue caps. It makes the building look “boxy” and shorter. If they don’t clad the mechanical PH it’s going to look even cheaper.

Agreed. My main issue with this reclad is that the building just doesn't stand out anymore. Whether one liked the gold or not, it at least gave some separation and was distinct. Wish they'd put a spire or add a slanted top. That would make it much more noticeable. Won't happen though.

Are there more LED strips to be installed? As it is, it's pretty underwhelming and kind of tacky. Looks like a complete after thought to me.
Say what you want about the LED explosion of the Tron building (aka WSP) or ATB, but at least there you know they didn't just come up with the idea at 2 am one night, "HEY WE SHOULD THROW SOME LIGHTS ON THIS."
Scotia place isn't a Honda civic that needs LED valve stem caps...

I guess I don't think you can really see it from many vantage points and it just is on the smallest facet of the building.
It's not terrible, maybe I oversold how I feel, but I think it would be better as a more holistic application.

New elevator/mech penthouse cladding on the left (silver & very reflective) versus the soon to be completed older brown/bronze to the right.

I had mixed feelings about the reclad. Felt the gold gave some separation and distinction. I'm happy with the results though. Looks more modern and elegant with the blue cladding and silver. Won't miss the gold now.

New glass looks good. I wish they had used something other than blue, I would have liked Silver (think EAP in Calgary) however, I am not backing this project financially so at the end it doesnt really matter what I would have liked to see.

Hope they redo the podium, it doesnt match the towers anymore, screams 1980's way too much.

there's some validity here with adding yet more blue/green to a downtown that seems to already have plenty of it. glad to see the gold gone actually but would have liked to see another color instead.

it’s a technical issue as well as an architectural one (with the exception of spandrel panels). because any coloured glass will have an effect on the quality of light inside the space, despite efforts to make the coloured element reflective and not translucent, many if not most other colours can have some quite detrimental effects in the resulting properties and characteristics of the light in the building. whites walls aren’t perceived as white, colours that should complement start to clash, even skin tones can pick up disconcerting hues. it can be like wearing strangely tinted glasses all the time.
