World Curling Championships back in Edmonton one last time
LAS VEGAS – It could be the last major sports event in the place which has been iconic for curling as well as hockey.

The Northlands Arena (a.k.a Northlands Coliseum, Skyreach Centre, Rexall Place), your correspondent has learned, will celebrate the biggest success stories in the entire curling universe with one last hosting, the April 1-9 2017 World Curling Championships.

Curling champ Rachel Homan has not forsaken Ontario for Edmonton
LAS VEGAS - Rachel Homan hasn’t exactly gone out of her way to broadcast the fact she’s the new champion in the City of Champions.

Homan has managed to keep it relatively quiet that she has enrolled in the University of Alberta for the next few years.

So, no, Alberta, the toughest province to get out of in curling, doesn’t have another top team. The 26-year-old, two-time Scotties champion and World silver and bronze medalist has not forsaken hometown Ottawa or playing for Ontario.

Hmmm, maybe I should also get a second degree in education.

^ I hate to be bearer of bad news, but what that article fails to mention is that the gorgeous lady's fiance is also from here. I wouldn't be surprised if she'll eventually relocate here after the next Olympics.

Alberta's Carey captures first Scotties title of career
    http://www.tsn.ca/alberta-s-carey-ca...areer-1.445152

GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. - Alberta's Chelsea Carey defeated Northern Ontario's Krista McCarville 7-6 on Sunday to win the Canadian women's curling championship.

Carey's Alberta rink will represent Canada at next month's women's world curling championship in Swift Current, Sask.

They'll also return to next year's Scotties Tournament of Hearts in St. Catharines, Ont., wearing the Maple Leaf as Team Canada.

Carey finished first in round-robin play and then beat defending champion Jennifer Jones in the Page 1-2 playoff on Friday to make the final.

McCarville, who finished fourth in the preliminary round, advanced to the final when she toppled Jones in the semifinal on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, Jones won the bronze medal by downing Manitoba's Kerri Einarson 8-7.

Chelsea Carey eliminated from gold contention at curling worlds

Carey mounted a late charge against Russia's Anna Sidorova but came up short in a 7-4 loss on Saturday afternoon in the 3-4 Page playoff of the international event. Carey and her teammates offered their hands in the 10th end after it was clear they would not be able to tie it and force extra ends.

Hopefully Carey will win the bronze.

I want to see the Russian ice queen, Anna Sidorova, win a world championship.

Good article. Heather Nedohin has been an outstading manager for the Sherwood Park Curling Club.

Canada's Gushue golden at world men's curling championship
    http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/wi...ship-1.4063325

EDMONTON — Canada's Brad Gushue completed a perfect run at the Ford World Men's Curling Championship on Sunday with a 4-2 victory over Sweden's Niklas Edin in the gold-medal game.

Gushue drew to the four-foot ring to score two points in the ninth end and delivered a takeout for the win in the 10th.

He defeated Edin on three occasions en route to his first world title. Gushue beat him once during an 11-0 round-robin, topped him in the Page 1-2 game and did it again when it counted most.

"It's awesome," Gushue said. "That was a stressful game. Niklas and his team played so well. You have to give them credit. They're one of the best teams in the world.

"It took everything we had to beat them tonight."

The St. John's team of Gushue, third Mark Nichols, second Brett Gallant and lead Geoff Walker are the first rink to go undefeated at this event since Winnipeg's Kerry Burtnyk in 1995.

Gushue is the first skip to do it in the 12-team era.

Brad's team seriously outclassed the competition. The event lacked any real excitement IMO.
