Bodega/Urbano expansion

Anybody who has visited Bodega Wine and Tapas Bar, located within Sabor restaurant downtown, will be thrilled with the news that an expansion is planned. Bodega’s co-owners, Christian Mena and chef Lino Oliveira are taking the concept of this tiny, charming and delicious space into the Highlands neighbourhood.

The duo hopes for a May opening for the new wine and tapas bar, which has yet to be named. The space, at 6509 112 Ave., has seen two, ill-fated eateries since its heyday, when chef Cindy Lazarenko ran the delicious Highlands Kitchen from its tiny environs.

In other news, Mena and Oliveira are adding to their mini-franchise, Urbano Pizza Co. It opened next door to Sabor in 2015 and is now expanding to two other locations. One is in the new Orange Market on Whyte Avenue and the other is a larger, sit-down, licensed version on 124 Street. The latter will offer customers a family-friendly dining experience with gelato and coffee to end each meal.

With two new locations – and possibly more to come – Mena and Oliveira see the 112 Avenue space working by day as a commissary for Urbano and the team’s offsite catering. At night, the baby Bodega will offer traditional Spanish tapas, wine by the glass and a charming outdoor patio come summer.
