I think it's nice to see the growth of the area around the Ice District. For the longest time, people wouldn't step outside of City Centre Mall, and Greyhound gradually declined into a dive.

appears to be roughly 38 usable floors in the tower itself.

    Gotta love the rooftop garden

Think I counted 44 floors total; so the reduction was correct and it didn't increase back above 50 to whomever was spinning the rumour mill.

Will be nice to see the other side of it. I think I would like it if the glass on that lower portion went all the way up the narrow side.

Who knows how new that is, they keep stating Stantec as 62 floors too

Incredibly disappointing if that's the actual version. Especially since the fly placeholder renderings.

Podium and rooftop garden look perfect. I could care less if the tower is average so long as we get those amenities.

I was the one who stated 50 plus and that it would also blend in better with the Arena and you can tell with the curved edges and color that's what they have done. And lets wait for the official floor count before jumping to conclusions. My source was dead on with Stantec. And knew the design change on this one. If it is under 50 it's not what he had heard.

Maybe that entire east face of the tower lights up at night with an LED show. But yea the more I stare at it, the less pleasing it appears. South face is alright. East face is quite dismal.

Very disappointing. It would look better minus the very top floor (the one bearing the ICE District logo). That top floor looks very awkward.

Massing wise, it's in the ballpark. Twice as tall, but looks to be wider as well. Obviously exterior materials will be very different. That rendering certainly isn't flattering. Podium looks great, but the tower is a giant "meh" for me.

No idea if this means anything. Maybe just an oversight. But the big Cineplex sign over the main entrance seems to be missing from the new render.

Is that approved? Or will the city have opportunity to request some changes? Or as with everything Katz related, will it get rubber stamped automatically without much criticism?

The new renderings remind me of a box of cereal. I just don't know what they are thinking with this design. I also thought the rumour was this to be 190m. Doesn't look like it. Glad something is being built but that's way off what I thought it would be. I think in the end, the ICE district will look great as a whole but they should have stuck closer to the original renders.

I shot this little time lapse of the southeast corner coming down that day. Of course that was right when the boards were down. Still worth sharing with everyone here now I think.

I noticed in their Ice Level video this week about the Greyhound demolition that they only used old renders to show what would be going up in its place. They also said it would be 40 stories.

They're trying to keep a unified look as this tower is a watered down version of Stantec. Personally, the oringinal offer is way more complimentary to the arena. I would ve ok with this for nirth of the arena. Who was it that told us this was suppose to be a better version?

149 metres is 1 metre short of making it own the Skyscraper list...150 is the metric used to be listed.

Ya, the more I look at the new render the more I dislike it. My guess is that everyone involved prefers the original render also, which means it's likely a cost issue.

It's like the developers are trolling us here. 1 meter short plus an inferior render of the original one.

Tower B is going to be 50 stories/165m of residential with the roof elevation 53 stories at 171m. Not to your ex·pec·ta·tions? Then I suggest you take a walk over to the concrete square Telus tower and its runt offspring or perhaps the Library with its remand centre motif!

In 2014 we would've been cartwheeling at the thought of this tower but in 2016 a "stumpy" 560ft'er will be met with a lot of critisim and negative innuendo aimed at the stakeholders lol

They will apply for building permits in stages. First the foundations then the parkade etc. Probably won't finalize plans until they get to grade.

For what it's worth my source told me awhile ago that the design had changed to blend in with the arena better . These renderings show this with color and curved edges and curved glass like arena. He also told me he had not heard of a height reduction and was still over 50 floors I posted this he a month ago or so. Not that there is not a reduction just that he had not heard of one. He was exact on every detail about Stantec and knew of height increase only months after original proposal i posted these changes as well before being released to public. I still say no one should take anything as fact till official renderings are submitted to the DP. I also cannot get any more info on this project as he took a better job in engineering in Austin Texas and is working on highrise builds there.

Looking closely at the arena in Chris's photos, some of the metal strips recently added don't match the colour of most of the others and thus stand out conspicuously. Will that be corrected? is it even correctable? If it doesn't get fixed, it will really detract from the overall external look of the arena.

Wrong thread, I know, but the arena thread doesn't contain these pics.
I think some panels have the protective plastic on them that is blue and others have plastic that is dark grey.

If you zoom in close enough, it looks to be a protective plastic coating. The metal is the same color as the rest. From the renders, there should be a greyish stripe of material on the west and north side of the arena, but not on the winter garden.

Same as when you buy an appliance and have to peel off the blue plastic film.

I'm sure Virex will chime in here when he is able and provide more insight for this tower. He posted the core of the Stantec tower I believe and has also been bang on with the pour information for both towers. If it is still evolving though, we might not hear anything right away.

Is this kindergarten recessTonka toy time or professionals? Your general acute labourers net between 60-120K, so I think they can see something right in front of their face if you can critique through a photo. Dear lord, lets put some thought to this...

You might want to do the same, because I don't think Dan or myself have the slightest clue what you're talking about.

I'm not so sure? If you look at the old render the sign merely covered the non glass area. Now it is more visible but I don't think there is any reduction (in the second set of images).

Also, they have used smaller tiles for the siding that look like real wood, compared to cheaper metal paneling. That is an improvement.

The podium roofline is also different but I cannot say it is better or worse really.

Agreed - the bottom two would look very similar if the new render was covered in ads. Also, the wood-ish looking paneling is an improvement over the first renders.

The first two are a different story...

I wonder if the deal with cineplex isn't going on anymore? All the new renders have the logo missing and the last video where they had some guy talking about what was going to replace greyhound he talked about the grocery store and a huge sporting store but never said a word about cineplex. I find it weird because last year they were hyping it as downtown Edmonton's first VIP theatre experience and going on and on about it but now....nothing.

There's still going to be a Cineplex, according to their website
    http://icedistrictproperties.com/ame...rtainment.html

ICE District will introduce a new era of entertainment. Cineplex UltraAVX & VIP Cinemas will be downtown Edmonton’s first premium Cineplex theatre, spanning over 35,000 sq. ft. and offering reserved seating, in-theatre food and beverage service and licenced auditoriums.
