    Default City charter

Anyone else terrified with Edmonton and Calgary looking at creating their own charters? Let's face it, this means one thing - the ability for each city to create their own taxes separate from the Feds and provincial government. Vancouver already does this with an extra 11 cents i believe on gas. Many cities in the US have their own sales taxes as well.

It will change the way municipal elections work I bet. More people will vote for whoever promises them enough services and fun for the least amount of promised taxes. It could be dangerous but it could also be a good way to get people more involved in what is going on at the municipal level, which in a lot of ways is the one that affects each of us the most.

If the city wants it's own charter, then it had better be held to a higher standard then it is now, wrt to items such as pay increases, cost containment, transparency , efficiency , accountability. same old, same old will not cut it anymore.

    City charters still to come

Other regulations released in draft form Monday include changes to the amount of infrastructure developers can be required to pay for in new areas and how that is calculated, how disagreements between municipalities in Alberta will be resolved, and how complaints about property tax assessments are handled.

In a newsletter update to interested parties, Municipal Affairs Minister Shaye Anderson said two final regulations are expected to be released “in the coming months.”

That release is expected to include the city charters, which will outline a new relationship for the province and its two major cities.
