    Default Cody Franson?

A lot of talk about maybe signing Cody Franson as a depth player / D. I don't see any significant harm in that, but lots of red flags this guy. He reads a bit like Fayne or Nikitin - a fancy stats darling who is big, but just doesn't have the speed to face anything but the very weakest opposition:

If they can get him on a 1 year deal for 2-3m, it's worth it as an insurance policy. The Oilers are one injury away from having Matt Benning playing 25 minutes a night. And he's the booming right shot that the PP could use. But yeah, no sale if he wants a second year unless it's dirt cheap.

^I wouldn't mind seeing him as a try out in camp. We have some interesting D prospects though who are getting close to being ready for an NHL try out, so I'd like to see how he lines up against them (Dillion Simpson would be an example, the L/R thing isn't critical given Russel can flip, a little further away are Bear and Jones who are very exciting), and Fayne is still on the roster, before making a decision. 2-3 million and that roster spot could be more useful at the trade deadline, assuming a playoff push.

The L/R thing is a big concern, as the Oilers have no depth on the right side. Bear won't be close to ready for the NHL this year. The Oilers have Larsson, Benning, Gryba, and Fayne. Only two of those guys should be playing more than 12-14 minutes a night (Benning/Larsson), and one of them has played 4 NHL games in 18 months (Fayne). If either Larsson or Benning get hurt, it's a big problem. Russell can play right, but it's pretty clear that there is an impact on performance when he does it. No way that you throw Simpson or Jones to the wolves playing on his off side.

And finally, if they do sign Franson to a reasonable 1 year deal and realize they don't need him come spring, it would be easy to trade him elsewhere at the deadline to free up a roster spot and/or cap space to fill a hole elsewhere.

^Mark Fayne is a RD, he is the emergency cover for Larsson Benning and Gryba (Klefbom Russel and Nurse on other side). I think he is basically the same as Franson. Alternativley, we know Russel can switch so can create a space for Simpson, Lowe or Stanton (who has 120 NHL games) - Russel did very well at RD last year, but I expect he might fill in for Sekara on LD at start of season. As to the, "easy to move Franson" analysis, it doesn't seem many teams are interested in him right now, I doubt that will change at the deadline. Like a lot of marginal D (e.g. Fayne / Nikitin), his fancy stats look ok, but that's because he is only ever trusted against fourth line pluggers, those are the only players his skating can keep up with.

That's pretty funny. I hope McDavid chirps him through the season asking him how "Teddy" is.
They're going to park their car over there. You're going to park your car over here. Get it?
