Thread: The TRUTH about climate change

  1. #1001

Default The TRUTH. This is what passes for "science" when you publish "climate science".

Young aspiring scientists can easily get published if they write a "climate change" paper. There is no bar. There is no standard. There is nothing that won't get published if you say the climate changed, and man is the cause.

Here is one example of many hundreds I could post. I would be ashamed if my name were on a publication like this.

    Published in a journal....

"Disproportionate magnitude of climate change in United States national parks"

    "Abstract
Anthropogenic climate change is altering ecological and human systems globally..........Between 1895 and 2010, mean annual temperature of the national park area increased 1.0 C 0.2 C century−1 (mean standard error), double the US rate....."

    Significance

The end of the Little Ice Age in the European Alps has long been a paradox to glaciology and climatology. Glaciers in the Alps began to retreat abruptly in the mid-19th century, but reconstructions of temperature and precipitation indicate that glaciers should have instead advanced into the 20th century. We observe that industrial black carbon in snow began to increase markedly in the mid-19th century and show with simulations that the associated increases in absorbed sunlight by black carbon in snow and snowmelt were of sufficient magnitude to cause this scale of glacier retreat. This hypothesis offers a physically based explanation for the glacier retreat that maintains consistency with the temperature and precipitation reconstructions.

    http://www.pnas.org/content/110/38/15216
I was going to address this more in-depth, but realized it would be a waste of time since you don't seem to understand what a positive feedback loop is.

Literally the only thing this paper states relevant to climate change is that the changes that were already occurring should be taken into account when determining glacial retreat. Nothing about how it means glaciers are not getting affected by climate change.

The potential implication of BC deposition in the end of the glacial LIA in the European Alps and the growing understanding of the magnitude of radiative forcing by dust and BC suggests that studies of past, present, and future changes in glacier mass balance should consider these albedo-driven changes to ensure physical consistency.

Default The TRUTH. Are these guys saying what I think they're saying?

That all climate papers written about coastline wetland loss make a fundamental error????? Get ready for a new trend. Scientists telling the truth about climate science. Long overdue.

"Future response of global coastal wetlands to sea-level rise

    Abstract

The response of coastal wetlands to sea-level rise during the twenty-first century remains uncertain. Global-scale projections suggest that between 20 and 90 per cent (for low and high sea-level rise scenarios, respectively) of the present-day coastal wetland area will be lost, which will in turn result in the loss of biodiversity and highly valued ecosystem services1,2,3...

……………………………………………………... These projections do not necessarily take into account all essential geomorphological4,5,6,7 and socio-economic system feedbacks8.

..…………………………………………………………... Here we present an integrated global modelling approach that considers both the ability of coastal wetlands to build up vertically by sediment accretion, and the accommodation space...……."

Default The TRUTH. The IPCC climate models get tested, and fail.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was created by the UN as an international body to review and summarize climate science. It was created so that countries of the world have a single source review of the latest climate science. The IPCC makes projections of climate change, and subsequent policy recommendations, based on the latest climate models. Climate models (software simulations of the earth's heat budget) are purported to be able to predict the temperature of the earth 100 years from now. They are supposed to be able to solve the numerous, complex, and unknown variables.

Canadian scientist Ross Mckitrick and John Christy tested the IPCC climate models......

"A Test of the Tropical 200- to 300-hPa Warming Rate in Climate Models

    Abstract
Overall climate sensitivity to CO2 doubling in a general circulation model results from a complex
system of parameterizations in combination with the underlying model structure. We refer to this as the models major hypothesis, and we assume it to be testable. We explain four criteria that a valid test should meet: measurability, specificity, independence, and uniqueness. We argue that temperature change in the tropical 200- to 300-hPa layer meets these criteria. Comparing modeled to observed trends over the past 60 years using a persistence-robust variance estimator shows that all models warm more rapidly than observations and in the majority of individual cases the discrepancy is statistically significant. We argue that this provides informative evidence against the major hypothesis in most current climate models."

Default The TRUTH. Green advocates leading us down the wrong path with lies

"Mark Cameron's green group "Canadians for Clean Prosperity" tells us Canadians will MAKE MONEY with a carbon tax................

"Opponents of the federal government's carbon pricing plan call it a "tax on everything," but a new report suggests it could actually be a "rebate on everything" for consumers in provinces where the tax will be implemented.A soon-to-be-released study says people living in provinces that don't set up their own carbon pricing plan could actually get more money back from a federal carbon tax in the form of government payments than they would pay into it. The study concluded low-income households would benefit the most.
The research comes from Canadians for Clean Prosperity, a group that advocates for "market-based policies that generate growth while conserving our environment." The group is headed by Mark Cameron, a former policy director in the prime minister's office under Stephen Harper."

According to their research........... "A family earning $60,000-$80,000 would pay $322 extra in Alberta and $332 extra in Saskatchewan in 2019, but the estimated rebate per household would be $868 and $1,075, respectively."

Not sure what school of economics Mark Cameron and his group went to. Thanks for your report Mark, is your group going to stand behind these numbers?

Are we looking at the same graph? Either way it's hilarious when you post a graph that shows a clear warming trend, and then use two data points to try and claim there's no warming.

He posted that before and specifically said it didn't show a warming trend. It's mind boggling that he can't actually read the graph and see it clearly shows a 0.4-0.5C warming trend over 40 years.

Default The TRUTH. Scientist Roy Spencer, keeper of UAH data, calls top climate advocates liars

There are a number of ways to measure worldwide temperature. NOAA and GISS are land based weather stations. The advantage of land based stations is that the record goes back over 100 years. The disadvantage is that they are not worldwide, and are biased by fudging and local warming. Satellite data isn't as easy to fudge but it only goes back about 40 years. The two most commonly referenced satellite data sets are UAH and RSS. Dr. Roy Spencer is the keeper of UAH temperature data. In this video Roy Spencer criticizes the Washington Post, the media, Al Gore, Neil DeGrasse. He also has a special shout out to Bill Nye for fabricating a fraudulent video demonstrating "global warming" by heating CO2 in a jar with infra-red.

If global warming science is so clear, why all the fraud and dirty tricks?

Link to Bill Nye's fraudulent "high school" CO2 "science" experiment fraud........

"Al Gore and Bill Nye FAIL at doing a simple CO2 experimentReplicating Al Gore’s Climate 101 video experiment (from the 24 hour Gore-a-thon) shows that his “high school physics” could never work as advertised"

Default The TRUTH. The fake arctic sea ice loss.

Well fellow Edmontonians and Albertans if you've been following the news we're getting all kinds of reports leading up to this years climate summit. 30 years ago we had only a few years left to save the planet. The story hasn't changed in 30 years.

Today's topic is about the collapse of the arctic ice. We're told the arctic is in a "death spiral" and may be free of ice in our lifetime. NASA has satellite data going back to 1980 showing a continuous decline in sea ice.

    (insert sound of record scratch)

Didn't we go to the moon in 1970? Weren't there satellites before we went to the moon?

What about the first IPCC report showing arctic sea ice at its lowest in 1970?

Default The TRUTH. More hockey stick graphs, same old fraud

Ladies and gentlemen of Alberta and Edmonton. Much rests on the hockey stick graphs to represent significant warming in correlation to rising CO2. But as i have shown you in previous posts much of the "evidence" is nothing but fraud.
The hockey stick graph is created by using "proxy" records of the past and and using instrument records for the present. Proxy records are indirect measurements of temperature, such as tree rings, lake sediment composition, etc. And the instrument record is typically NASA's fudged land based record. You can argue that NASA's constant fudging of the data to make the past colder and the present warmer is valid, but you can't argue they're not doing it. The internet has records going back many years and previous versions of NASA's GISS remain in many places.
The latest hockey stick graph used by the IPCC is "pages 2k", published by the journal Nature (after being rejected by the journal Science).

"A global multiproxy database for temperature reconstructions of the Common Era"
    https://www.nature.com/articles/sdata201788

The same dirty tricks apply. They quote hundreds of proxies, but only actually use a handful. The proxies used are selected if they have a hockey stick shape. Lake sediment records are used that show massive recent warming, but the sediment change is due to a dam being built, not warming.

In previous posts I showed you how our very own Canadian Steve McIntyre audits, and exposes every trick used in making these fraudulent graphs. Well, Steve's still up to the task. Here's his analysis of the latest hockey stick representation being used by the IPCC.........

"The most recent large-scale compilation of proxy records over the past two millennia is PAGES (2017). They made a concerted effort to archive data (to the credit of Julien Emile-Geay), archiving 692 series, but they perpetuated most other sins within the field."

"profound problems with the tree ring chronologies and lake sediment series which make up the vast majority of data in PAGES 2017 and similar studies."

"I discussed this network a few days after publication, pointing out some serious problems which had been overlooked in the hasty review of PAGES2K (2013) by Nature after it had been rejected by Science. The hasty review was required because IPCC AR6 had cited PAGES2K then in review, not anticipating that it would be rejected. "

"it is hard to imagine any serious climate scientist using instrumental temperature data in a proxy network, except that the practice has been encountered much too often, including Mann et al 1998."

"When one re-examines the original publication (De Jong et al 2013 ), one finds that they reported a man-made intervention at the precise time when sedimentation rates increased so dramatically:
A small creek with episodic flow enters the lake in the northwestern side and has formed a small, shallow delta. Additional sediment inflow likely occurs during snow melting from the surrounding slopes to the N, E and W. … An outflow is located in the SW. Since ca. AD 1885, this outflow was dammed and regulated (A. Espinoza, personal communication, 2006). [my bold]"

    *yawn*

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hockey_stick_controversy

In 2005, McIntyre and McKitrick published criticisms of the principal component analysis methodology as used in MBH98 and MBH99. The analysis therein was subsequently disputed by published papers, including Huybers 2005 and Wahl & Ammann 2007, which pointed to errors in the McIntyre and McKitrick methodology. In June 2005, Rep. Joe Barton launched what Sherwood Boehlert, chairman of the House Science Committee, called a "misguided and illegitimate investigation" into the data, methods and personal information of Mann, Bradley and Hughes. At Boehlert's request, a panel of scientists convened by the National Research Council was set up, which reported in 2006, supporting Mann's findings with some qualifications, including agreeing that there were some statistical failings but these had little effect on the result.[12] Barton and U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield requested Edward Wegman to set up a team of statisticians to investigate, and they supported McIntyre and McKitrick's view that there were statistical failings, although they did not quantify whether there was any significant effect. They also produced an extensive network analysis which has been discredited by expert opinion and found to have issues of plagiarism. Arguments against the MBH studies were reintroduced as part of the Climatic Research Unit email controversy, but dismissed by eight independent investigations.More than two dozen reconstructions, using various statistical methods and combinations of proxy records, have supported the broad consensus shown in the original 1998 hockey-stick graph, with variations in how flat the pre-20th century "shaft" appears.[12][13] The 2007 IPCC Fourth Assessment Report cited 14 reconstructions, 10 of which covered 1,000 years or longer, to support its strengthened conclusion that it was likely that Northern Hemisphere temperatures during the 20th century were the highest in at least the past 1,300 years.[14] Over a dozen subsequent reconstructions, including Mann et al. 2008 and PAGES 2k Consortium 2013, have supported these general conclusions.
It's actually kind of funny that the guys they brought in to supposedly debunk Mann's temperature reconstruction themselves made numerous errors, their valid criticisms had little or no impact on the results, and one report in particular contained academic/scientific misconduct:

The report asserted that the critiques of MBH98 and MBH99 by McIntyre and McKitrick (MM) were "valid and compelling",[180] but failed to examine if the suggested corrections made any significant difference to the outcome, though studies including Wahl & Ammann 2006 had found that the hockey stick shape remained after the corrections.[181] The report reiterated the claim that the MBH method created a hockey-stick shape from random red noise, but Wegman failed to respond when the issue was shown to have been caused by an error in McIntyre and McKitrick's methodology, and despite repeated requests did not provide his code for comparison.[182][183]

A new criticism introduced in the Wegman report presented a social network analysis which implied problems with peer review not being independent,[184] alleging that the many co-authors Mann had worked with after the MBH studies had compromised the independence of scientists: this argument was dismissed by North, who said that report's claim "that there was too much reliance on peer review, which was not necessarily independent" misunderstood the peer review process in science. The peer review process of the Wegman report itself was questioned.[176][185] In 2007, Wegman and Said published a paper based on this social network analysis.[186] In 2010 this paper was found to include plagiarism which also appeared to be in the Wegman Report: Wegman said that material in it had been "basically copied and pasted" by a student who was the "most knowledgeable" member of his team, as she had taken a one-week course on network analysis with Kathleen Carley. Carley described the paper as an opinion piece lacking data needed to support its argument,[186][187] and John Quiggin gave his expert view that the Wegman report's analysis showed nothing more than a normal network of co-authorship.[188]

    *snip*

The Wegman report also alleged inadequate sharing of methods, code and data:[184] Mann testified that these had been available since May 2000 in full accordance with National Science Foundation requirements, and they had gone beyond these requirements to make their full proprietary computer codes public. Despite congressman Waxman pressing Wegman to release the code Ritson had requested, Wegman still declined to "disclose the details of our methods" and Mann said "It would appear that Dr. Wegman has completely failed to live up to the very standards he has publicly demanded of others."[183][190]
Talk about hypocrisy. One of the main criticisms of Mann and also during the "Climategate" thing was that skeptics got all bent out of shape when researchers refused to release their data or code for independent evaluation. Then the skeptics turn around and do the exact same thing.

Default The TRUTH. What does 2,000+ employees + $300 million get you?

A temperature data record full of mistakes.

There are only 2 major land based(weather station + ship records) temperature records in the world. The US has GISS and Britain has Hadcrut. An unknown university student decided to audit Hadcrut as his PhD thesis and found what 2,000 employees and a budget of $200 million could not.

"Hadley reply to first audit with foggy excuses about problems 2,000 staff didnt find

Last week we exposed absurd errors, brutal adjustments and an almost complete lack of quality control (was there any at all?) in the key HadCRUT4 data. The IPCCs favorite set is maintained (Im feeling generous) by the Met Office Hadley Centre and the Uni of East Anglias CRU in the UK."

"a PhD student working from home can find mistakes that the 226 million institute with 2,100 employees could not."

We must pay trillions, turn vegetarian, and live in cold rooms, but the actual historic measurements are irrelevant. Were some numbers left in Fahrenheit for 40 years?"

Links are dead. But in any case, it would appear to be a fairly standard denialist wingbat blog written by some woman who has zero climatology background. Hard to critique past that from what little you quoted above. I did come across this news article: https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nat...9d1dca52e7fe07

“The HadCRUT data set stretches back to 1850 and it contains over 7 million points of data from in excess of 7500 observation stations on land around the globe together with millions of measurements of sea-surface temperature”, the Met Office spokesman said.

He said the small number of specific errors highlighted represent a tiny fraction of the data and as such were likely to have a negligible impact on the overall results.

These are some of the errors found by the Australian PhD student:

    Details of the worst outliers

    • For April, June and July of 1978 Apto Uto (Colombia, ID:800890) had an average monthly temperature of 81.5C, 83.4C and 83.4C respectively.
    • The monthly mean temperature in September 1953 at Paltinis, Romania is reported as -46.4 C (in other years the September average was about 11.5C).
    • At Golden Rock Airport, on the island of St Kitts in the Caribbean, mean monthly temperatures for December in 1981 and 1984 are reported as 0.0C. But from 1971 to 1990 the average in all the other years was 26.0C.
    https://wattsupwiththat.com/2018/10/...d-with-errors/

Data entry errors involving a handful of records in a surface temperature record with millions of them are not going to in any way impact the reliability of long-term temperature trends. Especially when the errors cancel each other out. For example, the first bullet where the temperatures in three months back in 1978 were overestimated (likely due to a failure to convert from Fahrenheit).

    Talk about a nothing burger.

Yup. Not to mention that there are more than just 2 independent temperature records. That claim is an outright lie or misrepresentation by defining the term extremely selectively. There are dozens of independent temperature reconstructions, and one of them was even created by "skeptics" who later admitted they had been wrong: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Earth

It was even funded by Charles Koch!

Given project leader Muller's well-publicised concerns regarding the quality of climate change research, other critics anticipated that the Berkeley Earth study would be a vindication of their stance. For example, when the study team was announced, Anthony Watts, a blogger who popularized several of the issues addressed by the Berkeley Earth group study, expressed full confidence in the team's methods:
I'm prepared to accept whatever result they produce, even if it proves my premise wrong. ... [T]he method isn't the madness that we've seen from NOAA, NCDC, GISS, and CRU, and, there aren't any monetary strings attached to the result that I can tell. ... That lack of strings attached to funding, plus the broad mix of people involved especially those who have previous experience in handling large data sets gives me greater confidence in the result being closer to a bona fide ground truth than anything we've seen yet.
    — Anthony Watts[17]
When the initial results were released, and found to support the existing consensus, the study was widely decried by deniers. Watts spoke to The New York Times, which wrote: "Mr. Watts ... contended that the study's methodology was flawed because it examined data over a 60-year period instead of the 30-year-one that was the basis for his research and some other peer-reviewed studies. He also noted that the report had not yet been peer-reviewed and cited spelling errors as proof of sloppiness."[18][19] Steven Mosher, a co-author of a book critical of climate scientists, also disapproved saying that the study still lacked transparency. He said: "I'm not happy until the code is released and released in a language that people can use freely."[18](The code and dataset were by then available from the Berkeley Earth Data page.[20]) Stephen McIntyre, editor of Climate Audit, a climato-skeptics blog, said that "the team deserves credit for going back to the primary data and doing the work" and even though he had not had an opportunity to read the papers in detail, he questioned the analyses of urban heating and weather station quality.[16][21]
By contrast, the study was well received by Muller's peers in climate science research. James Hansen, a leading climate scientist and head of NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies commented that he had not yet read the research papers but was glad Muller was looking at the issue. He said "It should help inform those who have honest scepticism about global warming."[10] Phil Jones the director of the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia, said: "I look forward to reading the finalised paper once it has been reviewed and published. These initial findings are very encouraging and echo our own results and our conclusion that the impact of urban heat islands on the overall global temperature is minimal."[10]Michael Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Pennsylvania State University, commented that "...they get the same result that everyone else has gotten," and "that said, I think it's at least useful to see that even a critic like Muller, when he takes an honest look, finds that climate science is robust."[21] Peter Thorne, from the Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites in North Carolina and chair of the International Surface Temperature Initiative, said: "This takes a very distinct approach to the problem and comes up with the same answer, and that builds confidence that pre-existing estimates are in the right ballpark. There is very substantial value in having multiple groups looking at the same problem in different ways." [10]The ice core research scientist Eric Steig wrote at RealClimate.org that it was unsurprising that Berkeley Earth's results matched previous results so well: "Any of various simple statistical analyses of the freely available data ...show... that it was very very unlikely that the results would change".[22]

The only real mystery in this thread is which side of Hanlon's Razor MrCombust falls on.

"For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong"

^^This is exactly why I've asked Mr. Combust on several occasions why global warming deniers like Watts and McIntyre don't undertake their own global temperature reconstruction, instead of using selective and deceptive "analysis" to try to find errors in the existing ones. To the best of my recollection, Mr. Combust has never answered this question.

Someone poses a real geniune question to Mr Combust. Mr Combust doesn't answer real questions, what happens is he disappears for around a weeks time like nothing happened, comes back and then starts off fresh again, as if this was his first time posting here, repeating the same things he's repeated already. It's like the question causes the record to skip back to the beginning of the record, as if nothing had been played before, and the cycle continues. No, I didn't respond to you because you all missed the point. If "climate change" science is so clear, and so important, why does it take a guy working in his Mom's basement to audit, and uncover so many errors in a critical data set?

Default The TRUTH. Climate model predictions of arctic sea ice. This one's just for laughs.

Looks like they covered the whole range of prediction.

    Logic tells us that...........

    1) Most of the predictions must be wrong.
    2) When the time comes, the media will be alerted, and presented with the correct simulation, showing how accurate the climate models are.

Hey, earth to MrCombust. We believe the real scientists that all agree with each other, humans are the leading cause of climate change. We routinely debunk all the BS you lay down here, and you then ignore that, and repeat the same BS you've repeated since you first arrived. You seem to want to only believe the 0.00001% that seem to believe what's going on is all natural. It's not. WAKE UP. That guy in his mom's basement hasn't found anything, and that's already been proven to you, several times in this thread, but you ignore those posts each and everytime. Like a record.

Because obviously you live in a sheltered bubble where your mommy brings you milk and cookies after your 2 O'Clock nappy time, just in time for your educational program, 'SpongeBob SquarePants' comes on to give you the latest science against climate change. You take copious notes while in your PJ's and tinfoil hat. Then compile all the 'data' and post it on this forum for all of us to laugh at.

Ever think that you should get dressed and go outside and experience climate change? You are 44 years old, you should be able to go outside at least once without mommy putting on your bubble wrap, your harness and chaining you to the clothes line pole???

Default The TRUTH. Watch Lesley Stahl press Donald Trump with fake science

On the 60 minutes interview Lesley Stahl presses Donald Trump with fake science. You would think that CBS and a premier newscast would know more about the actual science. But no, same old simple lies about hurricanes and Greenland.

"Show me the scientists"?????? Here they are, agreeing with Donald Trump............
Hurricanes, from the Americam Meterological Society............
"since 1900 neither observed CONUS landfalling hurricane frequency nor intensity shows significant trends, including the devastating 2017 season."
    https://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/10....MS-D-17-0184.1

Greenland? Ice has been falling off of Greenland since it existed. The Vikings left Greenland 800 years ago because it got too cold.

Scientific consensus: Earth's climate is warming

Temperature data showing rapid warming in the past few decades. According to NASA data, 2016 was the warmest year since 1880, continuing a long-term trend of rising global temperatures. The 10 warmest years in the 138-year record all have occurred since 2000, with the four warmest years being the four most recent years. Credit: NASA/NOAA.
Multiple studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals1 show that 97 percent or more of actively publishing climate scientists agree*: Climate-warming trends over the past century are extremely likely due to human activities. In addition, most of the leading scientific organizations worldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position. The following is a partial list of these organizations, along with links to their published statements and a selection of related resources.
    AMERICAN SCIENTIFIC SOCIETIES

Statement on climate change from 18 scientific associations

"Observations throughout the world make it clear that climate change is occurring, and rigorous scientific research demonstrates that the greenhouse gases emitted by human activities are the primary driver." (2009)2

    • American Association for the Advancement of Science
"The scientific evidence is clear: global climate change caused by human activities is occurring now, and it is a growing threat to society." (2006)3

    • American Chemical Society
"Comprehensive scientific assessments of our current and potential future climates clearly indicate that climate change is real, largely attributable to emissions from human activities, and potentially a very serious problem." (2004)4

    • American Geophysical Union
"Human‐induced climate change requires urgent action. Humanity is the major influence on the global climate change observed over the past 50 years. Rapid societal responses can significantly lessen negative outcomes." (Adopted 2003, revised and reaffirmed 2007, 2012, 2013)5

    • American Medical Association
"Our AMA ... supports the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s fourth assessment report and concurs with the scientific consensus that the Earth is undergoing adverse global climate change and that anthropogenic contributions are significant." (2013)6

    • American Meteorological Society
"It is clear from extensive scientific evidence that the dominant cause of the rapid change in climate of the past half century is human-induced increases in the amount of atmospheric greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), chlorofluorocarbons, methane, and nitrous oxide." (2012)7

    • American Physical Society
"The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring. If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now." (2007)8

    • The Geological Society of America
"The Geological Society of America (GSA) concurs with assessments by the National Academies of Science (2005), the National Research Council (2006), and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2007) that global climate has warmed and that human activities (mainly greenhouse‐gas emissions) account for most of the warming since the middle 1900s." (2006; revised 2010)9

    SCIENCE ACADEMIES

    International academies: Joint statement

"Climate change is real. There will always be uncertainty in understanding a system as complex as the world’s climate. However there is now strong evidence that significant global warming is occurring. The evidence comes from direct measurements of rising surface air temperatures and subsurface ocean temperatures and from phenomena such as increases in average global sea levels, retreating glaciers, and changes to many physical and biological systems. It is likely that most of the warming in recent decades can be attributed to human activities (IPCC 2001)." (2005, 11 international science academies)10

    • U.S. National Academy of Sciences
"The scientific understanding of climate change is now sufficiently clear to justify taking steps to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere." (2005)11

    U.S. GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

    • U.S. Global Change Research Program
"The global warming of the past 50 years is due primarily to human-induced increases in heat-trapping gases. Human 'fingerprints' also have been identified in many other aspects of the climate system, including changes in ocean heat content, precipitation, atmospheric moisture, and Arctic sea ice." (2009, 13 U.S. government departments and agencies)12

    INTERGOVERNMENTAL BODIES

    • Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
“Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, and sea level has risen.”13

“Human influence on the climate system is clear, and recent anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases are the highest in history. Recent climate changes have had widespread impacts on human and natural systems.”14

*Technically, a “consensus” is a general agreement of opinion, but the scientific method steers us away from this to an objective framework. In science, facts or observations are explained by a hypothesis (a statement of a possible explanation for some natural phenomenon), which can then be tested and retested until it is refuted (or disproved).
As scientists gather more observations, they will build off one explanation and add details to complete the picture. Eventually, a group of hypotheses might be integrated and generalized into a scientific theory, a scientifically acceptable general principle or body of principles offered to explain phenomena.

Climate change: How do we know?

This graph, based on the comparison of atmospheric samples contained in ice cores and more recent direct measurements, provides evidence that atmospheric CO2 has increased since the Industrial Revolution. (Credit: Vostok ice core data/J.R. Petit et al.; NOAA Mauna Loa CO2 record.) Find out more about ice cores (external site).
The Earth's climate has changed throughout history. Just in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about 7,000 years ago marking the beginning of the modern climate era — and of human civilization. Most of these climate changes are attributed to very small variations in Earth’s orbit that change the amount of solar energy our planet receives.

Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal.
    - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is extremely likely (greater than 95 percent probability) to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented over decades to millennia.1
Earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances have enabled scientists to see the big picture, collecting many different types of information about our planet and its climate on a global scale. This body of data, collected over many years, reveals the signals of a changing climate.
The heat-trapping nature of carbon dioxide and other gases was demonstrated in the mid-19th century.2 Their ability to affect the transfer of infrared energy through the atmosphere is the scientific basis of many instruments flown by NASA. There is no question that increased levels of greenhouse gases must cause the Earth to warm in response.
Ice cores drawn from Greenland, Antarctica, and tropical mountain glaciers show that the Earth’s climate responds to changes in greenhouse gas levels. Ancient evidence can also be found in tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs, and layers of sedimentary rocks. This ancient, or paleoclimate, evidence reveals that current warming is occurring roughly ten times faster than the average rate of ice-age-recovery warming.3
The evidence for rapid climate change is compelling:

    Global temperature rise

    • The planet's average surface temperature has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.9 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century, a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere.4 Most of the warming occurred in the past 35 years, with the five warmest years on record taking place since 2010. Not only was 2016 the warmest year on record, but eight of the 12 months that make up the year — from January through September, with the exception of June — were the warmest on record for those respective months. 5

    • Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the acidity of surface ocean waters has increased by about 30 percent.13,14This increase is the result of humans emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and hence more being absorbed into the oceans. The amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the upper layer of the oceans is increasing by about 2 billion tons per year.15,16

    A blanket around the Earth

A layer of greenhouse gases – primarily water vapor, and including much smaller amounts of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide – acts as a thermal blanket for the Earth, absorbing heat and warming the surface to a life-supporting average of 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius).
Most climate scientists agree the main cause of the current global warming trend is human expansion of the "greenhouse effect"1 — warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space.
Certain gases in the atmosphere block heat from escaping. Long-lived gases that remain semi-permanently in the atmosphere and do not respond physically or chemically to changes in temperature are described as "forcing" climate change. Gases, such as water vapor, which respond physically or chemically to changes in temperature are seen as "feedbacks."
Gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect include:

    • Water vapor. The most abundant greenhouse gas, but importantly, it acts as a feedback to the climate. Water vapor increases as the Earth's atmosphere warms, but so does the possibility of clouds and precipitation, making these some of the most important feedback mechanisms to the greenhouse effect.

    • Carbon dioxide (CO2). A minor but very important component of the atmosphere, carbon dioxide is released through natural processes such as respiration and volcano eruptions and through human activities such as deforestation, land use changes, and burning fossil fuels. Humans have increased atmospheric CO2 concentration by more than a third since the Industrial Revolution began. This is the most important long-lived "forcing" of climate change.

    • Methane. A hydrocarbon gas produced both through natural sources and human activities, including the decomposition of wastes in landfills, agriculture, and especially rice cultivation, as well as ruminant digestion and manure management associated with domestic livestock. On a molecule-for-molecule basis, methane is a far more active greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, but also one which is much less abundant in the atmosphere.

    • Nitrous oxide. A powerful greenhouse gas produced by soil cultivation practices, especially the use of commercial and organic fertilizers, fossil fuel combustion, nitric acid production, and biomass burning.

    • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Synthetic compounds entirely of industrial origin used in a number of applications, but now largely regulated in production and release to the atmosphere by international agreement for their ability to contribute to destruction of the ozone layer. They are also greenhouse gases.

Not enough greenhouse effect: The planet Mars has a very thin atmosphere, nearly all carbon dioxide. Because of the low atmospheric pressure, and with little to no methane or water vapor to reinforce the weak greenhouse effect, Mars has a largely frozen surface that shows no evidence of life.
Too much greenhouse effect: The atmosphere of Venus, like Mars, is nearly all carbon dioxide. But Venus has about 154,000 times as much carbon dioxide in its atmosphere as Earth (and about 19,000 times as much as Mars does), producing a runaway greenhouse effect and a surface temperature hot enough to melt lead.
On Earth, human activities are changing the natural greenhouse. Over the last century the burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). This happens because the coal or oil burning process combines carbon with oxygen in the air to make CO2. To a lesser extent, the clearing of land for agriculture, industry, and other human activities has increased concentrations of greenhouse gases.
The consequences of changing the natural atmospheric greenhouse are difficult to predict, but certain effects seem likely:

    • On average, Earth will become warmer. Some regions may welcome warmer temperatures, but others may not.

    • Warmer conditions will probably lead to more evaporation and precipitation overall, but individual regions will vary, some becoming wetter and others dryer.

    • A stronger greenhouse effect will warm the oceans and partially melt glaciers and other ice, increasing sea level. Ocean water also will expand if it warms, contributing further to sea level rise.

    • Meanwhile, some crops and other plants may respond favorably to increased atmospheric CO2, growing more vigorously and using water more efficiently. At the same time, higher temperatures and shifting climate patterns may change the areas where crops grow best and affect the makeup of natural plant communities.

    The role of human activity

In its Fifth Assessment Report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a group of 1,300 independent scientific experts from countries all over the world under the auspices of the United Nations, concluded there's a more than 95 percent probability that human activities over the past 50 years have warmed our planet.
The industrial activities that our modern civilization depends upon have raised atmospheric carbon dioxide levels from 280 parts per million to 400 parts per million in the last 150 years. The panel also concluded there's a better than 95 percent probability that human-produced greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide have caused much of the observed increase in Earth's temperatures over the past 50 years.
The panel's full Summary for Policymakers report is online at http://ipcc.ch/pdf/assessment-report..._FINAL_SPM.pdf.
    Solar irradiance

It's reasonable to assume that changes in the sun's energy output would cause the climate to change, since the sun is the fundamental source of energy that drives our climate system.
Indeed, studies show that solar variability has played a role in past climate changes. For example, a decrease in solar activity is thought to have triggered the Little Ice Age between approximately 1650 and 1850, when Greenland was largely cut off by ice from 1410 to the 1720s and glaciers advanced in the Alps.
But several lines of evidence show that current global warming cannot be explained by changes in energy from the sun:

    • Since 1750, the average amount of energy coming from the sun either remained constant or increased slightly.

    • If the warming were caused by a more active sun, then scientists would expect to see warmer temperatures in all layers of the atmosphere. Instead, they have observed a cooling in the upper atmosphere, and a warming at the surface and in the lower parts of the atmosphere. That's because greenhouse gases are trapping heat in the lower atmosphere.

    • Climate models that include solar irradiance changes can’t reproduce the observed temperature trend over the past century or more without including a rise in greenhouse gases.

    Shrinking ice sheets

    • The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass. Data from NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment show Greenland lost an average of 281 billion tons of ice per year between 1993 and 2016, while Antarctica lost about 119 billion tons during the same time period. The rate of Antarctica ice mass loss has tripled in the last decade.7Image: Flowing meltwater from the Greenland ice sheet

    Ocean acidification

    • Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the acidity of surface ocean waters has increased by about 30 percent.13,14This increase is the result of humans emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and hence more being absorbed into the oceans. The amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the upper layer of the oceans is increasing by about 2 billion tons per year.15,16

Just a word about this deceptive little picture by NASA. What NASA doesn't tell you is that 100% of infra-red is already blocked by greenhouse gasses. 100% of infra-red from the sun is already blocked and reflected back into space. 100% of infra-red emitted by the surface of the earth is blocked and redirected until it returns to the earth or eventually makes it's way out of the atmosphere.

you haven't, and if you think you have, your sources are what is skeptical in all of this. Thanks for ignoring 99.9 of my last posts, like you ignore 99.9 of the facts, and just isolate your findings to one or two small trivial data points as if that is some sort of reason to ignore all the other data points.

Good on you. I'm not sure who you think you are fooling, outside of yourself.

First you said I didn't address the consensus.

Now you say my sources are bad.

    Which is it?

In the case of John Cook's survey, I used his own data. You don't think John Cook's data is a good source? Did you review what I posted?

    No.

How about my post about the American Meterological Society's survey? I referenced their data on their website. Did you review what I posted?

    No.

Of course you can't be fooled. How can you be fooled when you don't read or understand anything?
