Lead designer Brendan Lawlor said they received approval from the Edmonton Design Committee on the development permit just last week and hope to begin construction in the spring.

The existing structure will be demolished, Lawlor said, but the design for the new tower takes the surrounding heritage area zone into consideration after extensive consultation with the city and neighbouring businesses.

This included consideration of the three-dimensional diamond hanging on the east side of the Birks Building, which Holo-Blok is hoping to conserve on the new building. Without relocation, the highlight art piece would be covered up by the 11-storey structure. The dilemma is still unresolved, but Handa said they will continue to discuss with the Birks Building developers and all neighbours to work through problems as they arise.

“It’s up to the Birks Building if they want to be participants,” he said. “We’re going to try to keep those lines of communication open.” ...

Needing to have solid concrete on the east and west outside walls, Handa said the plan is to have them shine with large murals designed by local artists.
“Son, one day this will be an iconic structure shaping Edmonton’s skyline.”

I hope this project happens. Neat little designs like this add a lot.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

This is what Jasper Avenue should be - low rise buildings connected to each other and the sidewalk in front of them. Not monstrous podiums and their skyscrapers set back and aloof.

We had that in the past but 99% has been bulldozed.

I disagree. It should be an organic mixture of everything as only time and evolution could transpire that.

Same crew that completed the Empire State Building in just over a year?

Completely agree. Rendered it looks goofy, I’m worried that built it will look just awful.

I'll stick with what I see and remain adamant the concept is nice and unique but wrong location.

They're planning on getting rid of the occupational health and safety rules for this project? Cool!

Even if this turns out not the best looking, I can still see myself liking it. Very different and ambitious design style for downtown Edmonton.

Most of all though, are there any side profile shots? I'm curious to see how far the brick backdrops from those balconies (or what I assume are).
Twenty one, thirty one, and seven twenty-seven.

It's a likeable design as far as I'm concern. It would look better in other areas such as the courthouse on 97st area.
