I'm really not sue how I feel about this one. The man is a musical legend no matter how you slice it, and I still enjoy a lot of his work that I grew up with...but over the last decade or so he became so weird and gross.

Michael Jackson did want to get his music career back on track. Death is a guaranteed method of accomplishing that.

This may be a little belated, but former Governor General Romeo LeBlanc had his funeral last week.

^^A controversial figure for sure, but the news being swept under the rug probably has more to do to the timing of other recent deaths.

Certainly not the most likable guy, but an important figure nevertheless. That's just my opinion anyway. The 'Fog of War' film as an interesting one.

Don't know if that your writing or if you're quoting an article, RTA, but I think he's best known for his Molly Ringwald trilogy: 16 Candles, Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink.

He died Thursday at White Plains Hospital in White Plains, N.Y., with his family at his side.

Tonight I went to an event to mark the life of Dr. David Cook. Amazing man! Who knew all the things he was involved in. Passed away last week. Was part of the Dept of Medicine for 42 years. Knew him as a great cook and host and so-so runner who was the ultimate host. Judging by the full house at the Winspear tonight he will be missed by fine arts groups, medical colleagues, runners, for entirely different yet similar reasons. Loved life. Not famous in the sense of being "famous" but he will be missed by many for really touching their lives. He was 67.

^ And an older generation will remember Al Martino, one of the great crooners from the 50's and 60's who passed away today at age 82. Many with tickets to the upcoming Tony Bennett concert at the Jube will remember Al Martino, whose style was similar to Tony Bennett.

Default Service Friday for Tim Ryan

    Service Friday for Tim Ryan

    Edmonton Journal

    November 10, 2009

A memorial service will be held Friday for director Tim Ryan in a theatre he knew well: the John L. Haar at Grant MacEwan University's Jasper Place campus.

Ryan, a teacher, mentor, director, artistic director and the founding head of Grant Mac's theatre arts program, died last Thursday at 62 of congestive heart failure complicated by the H1N1 virus.

The memorial will include slides, shared memories and music, since Ryan knew everything there is to know about musical theatre.

It will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. The Jasper Place campus is at 10045 156th St.

Default Founder of CHQT Radio dies......

    Roskin, Lewis (1920- 2009)

Except for a stint in the Canadian Army, Lewis Roskin remained a "career broadcaster". At 17, he was an announcer specializing in sports at CJOC Lethbridge. In the ensuing 9 years, Lew learned everything he needed to know to set up and manage the program department of CJOB - Jack Blick's brand new radio station in Winnipeg which was launched in 1946.

In 1947, he went to CFRN in Edmonton as Program Director, and two years later to Dawson Creek, B.C. as General Manager of CJDC. 1954 found Lew as General Manager of the venerable CFCN in Calgary. A year later, he was back in Edmonton as Assistant Manager and General Sales Manager of CHED. Five years later, in 1961 he moved to Vancouver, to become General Manager of CKLG.

Another challenge opened up in Edmonton as Lew and his associates obtained a licence for the new station. CHQT - an AM station with "FM-type" programming. Lewis Roskin was the President and General Manager. In 1992, Lew opted for semi-retirement and formed a consulting company (Roskin Communications) to act as an advisor to CJCA Edmonton and others in Vancouver.

Whether in Winnipeg or Vancouver or points in-between, Lew took on an active role in community affairs. Similarly, he was prominent in promoting the best interests of Canadian broadcasters. He served two terms as president of the Broadcasters' Association of Alberta, two terms as a director of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters and one term as president of the Western Association of Broadcasters; and he became a well-qualified member of the CAB's Half-Century Club.

In 1984, Lew received the Golden Jubilee Award of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters. In 1985, the Ad Club of Edmonton named him "The Advertising Man of the Year".

In 2000, Lewis Roskin was inducted into the CAB Broadcast Hall of Fame.
Go ahead, speed pass me... I'll meet you at the next red light.

    Default Oops ...

The Edmonton Journal et al briefly had a story up today indicating Gordon Lightfoot had died. First it was listed as from a source close to the musician and then as an uncomfirmed report from CanWest News Service and then ... poof ...

Apparently the reports of his death were greatly exagerated. May his tour continue.

^ Fess was also a world-renowned vintner. His winery just outside of Santa Barbara was featured in the movie "Sideways". Just shared a bottle of a great Fess Parker Chardonnay the other night. I saw the label and actually wondered how he was doing and that he must be getting up there.

I had a Davy Crockett t-shirt as a kid - from about a decade after the show went off the air.

It is more than a month now but Edmonton radio legend Bob Comfort passed away. He wrote Ched's "Chicken Man" segments and hosted his own radio show in the early 70's. Bob went on to write for a number of high profile U.S. prime time TV shows.
