Donald Cormie, founder of Edmonton's Principal Group, dies

    BY JOURNAL STAFF, EDMONTONJOURNAL.COM
    APRIL 10, 2010 1:23 PM

EDMONTON - Principal Group founder Donald Cormie, whose Alberta-based financial empire left investors out nearly $500 million when it went into receivership in the 1980s, has died at his Arizona home.

The Harvard law school graduate was born in Edmonton and started First Investors in 1954 with partner Ken Marlin. The company eventually became part of the Principal Group, an Edmonton-based financial services firm that grew into Canada’s sixth-largest mutual fund manager.

But battered by Alberta’s recession following the 1970s oil boom, the Principal companies First Investors and Associated Investors, went into receivership in 1987, affecting more than 60,000 people.

Here's one (not sure if it's been done earlier or not...sorry too lazy I guess).

    Peter Sellers

    Death
In 1964, at age 38, Sellers suffered a series of heart attacks(13 in a few days), which permanently damaged his heart. Sellers chose to consult with psychic healers rather than seek Western medical treatment, and his heart condition continued to deteriorate. In 1977, he suffered a second major heart attack, resulting in him being fitted with a pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat. Once again, Sellers refused to slow down nor did he follows doctor's orders and consider open heart surgery, which would have considerably extended his life.

^ This thread is for those who pass away in the here and now, not 30 years ago. It's a means of informing people which famous person died today.

Take Sellers to one of your nostalgia threads, please.

We did some heavy research into the Principal matter when writing the Premier's book at the Legislature Library. Unfortunately all the good stuff was edited out (political correctness!).

I think what struck me the most was the claim on the part of Connie Osterman that the government's copies of documents on the Prinicipal matter were 'accidentally' shredded. Given the amount of paper they had, it would have taken several industrial paper shredders several days to completely dispose of the evidence.

All in all, hardly a simple victim of the 1980s recession.

This guy was a fraud and stole peoples money along with the Alberta CONS of the day like Tricky Dick Johnson and all the political fart catchers like Ken Marlin. Don Getty did such a crappy job in Office he did not get relected.....till they found a whimp MLA in Stettler to step down and Getty ran again in a Byelection and won a stacked election to get his sorry *** back in the CONS party. Geez if only there was an truly independent investigation into this Alberta Conservative Party dealings over the last 35 years, there would be more Conservatives in jail then in the Legislature....like the corrupt Conservative Government in Sask run by the Devine crooks, who were convicted and spent time in jail, or have paid back the stolen money.
People, please get out and vote in this next election to get rid of these sneaky losers.
Time will tell on this new Alberta Government.

Don Getty and the Tory politicians of the day were inept, and the late 80's spawned a fair amount of shady activity in and around the province in general. It was not our proudest time.

To me the tories needed a time out back then and here it is 20 odd years later and they STILL need that time out.

Cormie's offices up on the top floor had secret exits and everything so he could dash out when any officials showed up to interview him. I believe that was confirmed in the Code report (although could have been any number of investigative documents).

According to someone on this thread, it was known as Metropolitan Tower for a while, as a result of MetLife buying out what was left of Principal Trust.

Dio has been fighting stomach cancer since last year. And yes, the small man with the giant voice absolutely slayed on that 'Heaven and Hell' tour with Sabbath. He was in top form, and did a better job than guys 1/3 his age. It's unfortunate that such a likable, respectable, smart, and articulate metal singer is dead, yet that ***** Ozzy is still alive even after losing half his brain.

When I think about it, I think Dio is the first instance of a metal hero who lived long enough to die of natural causes.

Sad news. First time I saw Ronnie James Dio live was him fronting Black Sabbath in 1980 for the Mob rules tour. Did a lot of that album and Heaven and Hell. Of course with some classic Sabbath tracks mixed in.
Loudest concert I've ever been to. Ears were ringing all night long.

    Great stuff though..

    I'll remember that concert forever.

Dio was imo a great Sabbath singer and addition. Got some fantastic work out of the band that otherwise might not have occurred.

    Dr. Martha Bielish

Alberta's first female senator dies at 94

CALGARY — A woman who served as the first female senator from Alberta has died at the age of 94.

According to a death notice in a national newspaper, Dr. Martha Bielish, originally of Warspite, Alta., died peacefully on May 18.

It says she was named to the Senate in 1979, noting her appointment came 50 years after the suffrage movement first lobbied to have women eligible for such appointments.

The notice also said it was significant that Bielish was also the first woman of Ukrainian heritage to sit in the Senate.
Bielish served in the Senate until she retired in 1990.

Her family and the University of Calgary are establishing a scholarship in her honour.

One of my favorite Leslie Nielsen movies was the retro sci-fi flick Forbidden Planet. He certainly was a very handsome actor in his day.
