    Gaetz/QEII - I haven't been on the projects webpage in a while but it has been updated to show what to expect in 2017. It also shows a new overall finalized picture of the project. NOTE: This picture does not include the northern part of the project. If you right click and save the image to your desktop, you can then view the image in its full resolution.

    As for Gaetz/QE2 they've completed most of the pile driving for all bridges (Gaetz and Taylor Drive), the old Gaetz SB to QE2 SB bridge is closed but not demolished yet.

    Also exciting is that they're addressing the death trap clover at highway 53 (Rimbey/Ponoka) though I'm not sure what the upgrades will entail. I really like the province's commitment to improving QE2, all things considered.

    On the other hand, the lack of anything in the foreseeable future for Henday SW is nothing short of horrifying.

    A semi with a high load hit the west side of that overpass in January too. Its config has been messed up ever since.

    Default Highway 53 Upgrade

    They don't much care for my emails laying into them about Deerfoot and Henday, but they did respond to my inquiry about the highway 53 clover. The changes will be pretty much what I expected:

    We will be reconfiguring the interchange to a partial cloverleaf, similar to what was done at the Highway 2 and 27 interchange several years ago. The plan calls for removing access to the northwest and southeast loops and constructing alternative access for traffic to access Highway 53. This is an interim solution, intended to improve the access to and from Highway 2, our ultimate plans at some point in the future are to convert this interchange to a diamond configuration. Removing these two loops will remove the conflict that currently exists between traffic entering and exiting Highway 2 in short space and with a high speed differential.
    Estimating, but this project can be done for maybe $3-5 million for something that amounts to a huge increase in safety.

    Yah that's the way to go for the interim. Repairing the bridge there also started the other day from the high load impact back in January.

    No. Long-term, they intend to remove the remaining 2 loop ramps creating a diamond, which would have less capacity than the temporary partial cloverleaf. They're probably unhappy with the radius of the loops, and the fact that they don't like Parclo B interchanges (where freeway traffic exits using the loops as opposed to enter) unless obstacles demand it.

    I thought that AB Transportation wants to get rid of all those tight radius cloverleaf interchanges. They are not a fan of the cornering involved I guess...? The standard diamond interchange seem to work fairly well at most spots along the QEII. But the interchange at 67th Street/QEII in Red Deer would need something with more capacity to handle the traffic coming from and going to Sylvan Lake. If AB Transportation really does dislike the full and partial cloverleaf, this interchange will need attention. I'd be curious to see what they would plan to put there? Perhaps a diverging diamond interchange? That'd be neat.

    So then why not remove the NE and SW loops instead of the NW and SE? I also don't see how short-radius ramps are a problem once the interchange is reconfigured to remove the weave zones and allow for longer acceleration lanes. The distance required to accelerate from 40 to 110 km/h isn't much more than that required to accelerate from 70 to 110 km/h.

    I wonder if they'd be able to install DCMI interchanges at some of these highway junctions on the QEII. I like the concept. Freeflow traffic, no loop ramps, eliminates weaving. They may not suitable with the terrain in some places though, and would probably work best where the freeway is running at a somewhat lower elevation. Deerfoot/16 Ave N might be a good place for one of these, but I think the CP line running parallel to the freeway may make it difficult to place the side bridge on the west side.

    ^ There is plenty of height to work with at the highway 1 / 2 interchange with deerfoot at the bottom of the valley. Another alternative would be to build a bridge over the entire existing interchange for through traffic on 16 Av, which might allow the existing portion to operate like a traffic circle.

    That's basically a grade-separated version of the DDI interchange going up at Macleod/162 Ave in Calgary right now. It's far more suited to urban environments and the extra bridges would make it too cost prohibitive for almost all locations on QEII where a diamond would achieve an acceptable level of service at much less cost.

    This thread has been pretty quiet lately.

    QEII/Gaetz interchange has a completion date of Oct. 2018. Anyone been thru there lately? I don't know if they are going to make it. But I'm not in road construction so what do I know.

    It looks like the City of Calgary is planning to convert it to a Three-level diamond (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-...nd_interchange) and the improvements would include an interchange at 19 Street NE and a reconfiguration of the cloverleaf at 16th & Barlow; see http://www.calgary.ca/Transportation...ded-option.png.

    I was through there 2-3 weeks ago, the old bridge which connected southbound Gaetz Ave with Hwy 2 has been removed and the QEII lanes have been realigned. They also installed some high mast lighting.

    Yah it's coming along. The northbound lanes of the new alignment open in the next few days (minus the bridges).

    Looks like the first bridge structure is set to open to traffic tomorrow at QEII/Gaetz. (For at least a little bit of time.)

    Southbound Highway 2 traffic approaching Hwy2A/Taylor Drive will be temporarily detoured onto the recently completed bridge structure over Taylor Drive as of Tuesday, November 7, 2017

    Contacted AB Trans about tractor-trailer parking since the western frontage road is being closed. Currently, the western frontage road accomodates large trucks because it is a one way street w/ parking on the shoulder.

    This is what was asked:
    I have a question regarding the permenant closure of the Gas Alley West Frontage Road.

    When the new roundabout opens, the west frontage road will close. Currently, the west frontage road accomodates semi parking so drivers can utilize the services on the west side of Gas Alley. When this closes, is there a plan in place to allow drivers to park their rigs with ease? Such as a pull-through parking lot?

    Myself and some others have asked about this before, but nobody seems to know what the plan is.


    I got this response:

    thank you for your email. While trucks will still be able to access Gasoline Alley West, there are no plans for a designated parking lot or parking area to be provided by Alberta Transportation as part of this project. The businesses however may individually choose to accommodate trucks on their properties. You may also want to contact Red Deer County to see what their future plans are to accommodate trucks in the area.

    I have yet to contact RD County about it. But I'm hoping a pull through lot is built for the truckers.

    Regarding the 67th St./QEII interchange....I took another look at the functional plans and found what they plan to put there, at least what they plan to put there in 2011 when the plan was drawn up. There were two drawings made around the 67th/QEII interchange, the first one being on page 65 of the linked document. The first one looks to be the plan for a 6 lane QEII. This design is very similar to what exists now. Things to note are on/off-ramps are slightly re-aligned. The north bridge structure is modified and the parclo loops are modified.However, on page 72, there is another drawing which is called the 'Long Term Stage Plan'. Major modification here. Existing bridge structures modified. More bridge structures added. A free flowing NB QEII to WB HWY11 loop. Elimination of a set of lights. Looks really nice. Other things to note in this document are a design speed of 130kph shown in page 64. The 11A interchange is shown modified for the 'Long Term Stage Plan' on page 73.Right click, select 'Show Navigation Pane Buttons'. Select the 'Page Thumbnails' button in the top left.     ^ How many people actually use that interchange to access Sylvan Lake? Shortest route from Calgary is via 54 / 781. Shortest route from Edmonton is via 11A. Many commuters to / from Red Deer will just cross highway 2 and continue into Red Deer on 67 St.

    Well, looking at the AADT counts... it looks like a lot. I'm looking at raw data collected on Wednesday, May 18, 2016. Traffic counts for vehicles COMING FROM THE SOUTH ON 2 (NB QEII) and turning LEFT to proceed WB on 11 were a total of 4530. This data was collected between the hours of 7am to 7pm (12hr run).I think the designers of that plan put quite a bit of emphasis on the removal of that traffic light on the east side of the overpass structure as well. The data is located on the AB Trans website. There is a really good interactive map set up. Zoom to QEII/67th St interchange. Click on the little intersection symbol (82330) and then click on 'Raw' in the top right - it's an excel document. The years that are listed below 'Raw' are AADT estimates only.     Actually.... scratch that. The completion date for this project is 2019. It opens to traffic (but will remain a construction zone) in the fall of this year. Kind of funny, during all the announcements of this project, the gov made it sound like it would be 100% finished in 2018. But 100% completion has always been 2019. Flatirons webpage on the project has always said 2019 as well.
