Lake Superior State University’s 43rd Annual List of Banished Words

    https://www.lssu.edu/banished-words-list/

    And now, the 2018 list:

Unpack – Misused word for analyze, consider, assess. Concepts or positions are not packed, so they don’t need to be unpacked.

Tons – Refers to an exaggerated quantity, as in tons of sunshine or tons of work. ‘Lots’ would surely suffice.

Dish – As in to dish out the latest rumor on someone. Let’s go back to ‘talks about’ and leave dishes in the cupboard.

Pre-owned – What is so disgraceful about owning a used car now and then?

Onboarding / Offboarding – Creature from the HR Lagoon. We used to have hiring, training and orientation. Now we need to have an “onboarding” process. Firings, quitting, and retirements are streamlined into “offboarding.”

    Nothingburger
    – Says nothing that ‘nothing’ doesn’t already. I’ll take a quarter-pound of something in mine.

    Let that sink in
    – One could say shocking, profound, or important. Let that sink in.

Let me ask you this – Wholly unnecessary statement. Just ask the question already.

Impactful – A frivolous word groping for something ‘effective’ or ‘influential.’

Covfefe – An impulsive typo, born into a 140-character universe, somehow missed by the autocorrect feature.

Drill Down – Instead of expanding on a statement, we “drill down on it.”

Fake News – Once upon a time stories could be empirically disproved. Now ‘fake news’ is any story you disagree with.

    Hot Water Heater
    – Hot water does not need to be heated. ‘Water heater’ or ‘hot water maker’ will keep us out of hot water.

Gig Economy – Gigs are for musicians and stand-up comedians. Now expanded to imply a sense of freedom and a lifestyle that rejects tradition in a changing economic culture. Runs a risk of sharecropping.

I would say that "dish" has connotations that "talk about" lacks. As the listmakers themselves say, it implies gossip etc. So yes, you could just say "talk about", but it might lack that little something extra.

Nothingburger – Says nothing that ‘nothing’ doesn’t already. I’ll take a quarter-pound of something in mine.
Well, we do have a bit of a tradition in English of framing insults in a larger, albeit nonsensical, context. For example "You need to drink a nice tall glass of shut the f*** up". Of course, "shut the f*** up" gets the message across just as clearly, and there's no logical reason for the metaphor to be drinking, but it's still generally considered funnier.

    How about banned names.
I would like to stop hearing the names of:

    Hillary Clinton
    Matt Lauer
    Weinstein
    Weiner
    Kardashian's
    Obama's

and a slew of others too numerous to mention.
Gone............................and very quickly forgotten may I add.

Well let me ask you this, are you including Trump?

I bet Sessions would like his name banned as it’s only Trump that puts it back into public view every few weeks and never in a good way (via some derogatory comment about being dis-loyal).

^No I'm rather intrigued by Trump. He's a loose cannon and provides lots of thrills and spills. One day you laugh at him next day WTF, full of surprises. I like his wife, like to see how she dresses and interacts with people especially kids. The world has survived worse than the Trump's and he can always be voted out in the next election cycle.

But using your logic, Hillary Clinton has already been 'voted out'.

And Obama, technically, can never be voted in. Plus it is your hero Trump who brings up Obama's name more often than necessary.

^Trump my hero!. That is funny. Tell you what, let's stick to my logic as yours is not working.

    Back to Edmonton-specific words ...

I'd like to ban the mispronunciation of "Saville" as in the Saville Centre. It's SAH-vil, not seh-VILL.

How about, 'everybody' or 'everyone' as in...

"everybody knows there was no collusion"
    "everybody loves me"
"everybody wants to work in the White House"
    "everybody hated Comey."
“I know it, you know it, everybody knows it.”
    "Everyone knows I am right"
“I’m opposed to domestic violence and everybody here knows that,”
"Bigger than anybody and everybody knows it"
"Everyone’ Agrees ‘Nobody’s Been Tougher On Russia Than I Have"
“Everyone knows it’s a fix, okay? It’s a witch hunt
“Everyone thinks” I Should Win Nobel Peace Prize

    No, no, not everyone...
